Leg CrampFor problems with leg cramps, hiccups, eye twitching, menstrual cramps, neuralgias and pains of unknown origin, Magnesia phosphorica 6X can offer fast and lasting relief.

This cell salt is one of the finest analgesics I know. When pain is comforted by applied heat or warmth with pressure, Mag phos can bring relief in very short order.

Put 4 pills of Mag phos 6X in a cup of hot water, allow it to dissolve, stir once and sip it every 30 seconds or so as long as the liquid remains hot. For this remedy, the heat helps to activate and support its action. I like to call this remedy “Mug phos.”

The rapidity with which it resolves pain can be amazing. Menstrual pain, leg cramps and nearly any spasm of pain can be potentially relieved by this gem of a remedy. Because it has antispasmodic capabilities, Mag phos can also relieve hiccups, coughing fits, asthmatic episodes and stomach aches.

Mag phos 6X is the quintessential cell salt for women and children. Think of this remedy for monthly menstrual cramps, leg cramps or Charlie horses. The pain of childbirth can be lessened with several doses of this powerful little cell salt. Of course, the uterus needs to contract during childbirth, but the pain needn’t be as painful or as lengthy. During pregnancy, there is a great need for magnesium, so it’s only natural that there are many applications for Mag phos during this time.

I recall a memorable situation many years ago, while I was taking a class with more than 300 homeopathic students. A fellow student who had traveled from Iran and didn’t speak fluent English suddenly slumped over her desk in desperate pain. The pain so gripped her that she hadn’t the strength to move.

I was only a relative newcomer to the field of homeopathy, but my friend next to me was rather seasoned in the use of cell salts. He very unceremoniously left the room and returned with a cup of hot water, then reached into his briefcaseMug Phos and placed four pills of Mag phos 6X in the cup. He stirred it once and poured a little into the young woman’s mouth. This was all done without the teacher even noticing. My friend then whispered a few words to her and gently patted her back.

When he returned to his seat next to mine, he spoke in a confident and hushed voice, “She’ll be fine in a few minutes.” Sure enough, within minutes, she lifted her head. Her tear-stained face was in complete contrast to her full smile of relief. She stood up and gave my friend a hug.

This was my first introduction to the power of not only Mag phos but to the world of cell salts. It may not always act in such a quick manner, but if it is the correct remedy, it will pack a powerful punch that is downright memorable.

Was this nerve pain? Was it a muscle spasm? What was it? If this woman had gone the conventional medical route, she might have been subjected to invasive tests, and the answer would have been an analgesic of major proportions. It would likely have only returned in days, months or weeks, only to be suppressed each time with questionable drugs.

Instead, homeopathy got to the bottom of the problem and uprooted it. This event occurred more than 26 years ago, yet I will always remember the calm of my homeopathy friend and the joy on the face of the young Iranian student. This is the way medicine should work.

This is homeopathy, my friends.

Keep the good word by passing this on to friends.

I am a homeopath with a worldwide practice working with families and individuals via Zoom. I'm also a teacher and most importantly, a mom who raised my now-adult children depending on homeopathy over the last 31 years. I lived decades of my life with food intolerances, allergies, and chemical sensitivities until I was cured with homeopathy, so I understand pain, anxiety, and suffering. You may feel that your issues are more severe or different than anyone else’s, but I have seen it all in my practice and in my work in India. My opinion is that nothing has come close to the reproducible, safe and effective results that my clients, students and I have achieved with homeopathy.

Call today and learn how homeopathy might just be the missing piece in your health strategy.

is this remedy good for teeth grinding as well?! I seem to remember someone recommending it for this.
Magnesium is definitley good for leg cramps.

What is good for numbness? or does this need to be more specific?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

It might be worth trying, but teethgrinding is not what I’d consider a spasm.

Numbness is not covered by this remedy and would require a more in depth discussion. I’ll make a point of adding it to my list of blog subjects.

  2. Kayla says:

Have you any knowledge of – or experience with – this helping someone with muscle spasms and cramps that are part of Parkinson’s Disease? I have read a few times about massaging with magnesium oil, but it seems this might be a better option.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

There are other, more specific remedies to consider for this circumstance, but it would certainly be worth the effort to give this a try.

      1. Kayla says:

        Thank you!

      2. Toti says:

Hi. There. Thank you for your article. I am trying to find the other cell salts passed the 12. I need the one for thyroid that is one of the higher ones and I can’t find a company in the States that make them. Ty for your time.

  3. Mary F says:

Thank you so much for publishing this Joette!

    I’m forwarding this to family.

  4. Scotty D says:

I have kits of 30x and 200 c and many assorted remedies. I don’t have anything on hand with 6x. Is it okay to substitute 30x for 6x?

I am so grateful for your web site and emails. Thank you.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

In my experience, Mag phos is best suited to a variety of circumstances when used in 6x. But there are times when only a 30 or 200 potency will do. I’d urge you to get it in a 6x and start there.

  5. S_B says:

I use Arnica montana 30C for anything related to muscles. Two years ago I twisted my arm really badly and got unbearable pain that wouldn’t go away for days. Thanks to that experience I discovered Arnica Montana.
    Thank God for Homeopathy.

    1. Shelley says:

My husband has had plantar faciitis for many years and has tried so many things to get rid of it. Wonder if Arnica would help that too.

      1. Cheli says:

Hi Shelley, the remedy for plantar faciitis is different. It’s more similar to those used for arthritis, I believe. However, Arnica is an amazing remedy which seems to have a lot of uses so it might be worth trying!

  6. Shelley says:

I just saw this in my email literally moments after getting advice to take 4 Motrin to settle pains in my heels and leg cramps. Will this help? Also what brand of homeopathic remedies do u recommend pls?

    1. So sorry for responding so late, but better late than never.

I can’t guarantee that it will help, but I’ve witnessed it do so in many.

I can’t think of a homeopathy manufacturer in North America that is not reputable. Hyland’s, Dolisos, Boiron, Washington, Hahnemann, OHM. They’re all good.

  7. Carol Osterman says:

Mag Phos has a dedicated water bottle in our house for muscle cramps and I have recently started using it for the pounding headaches I get.

  8. Jillbs says:

I just had a Swedish massage last week, which resulted in some sore muscles! Should’ve grabbed the Mag phos!

  9. Cheli says:

I really like the cell salts, in general. They’re fun and easy to use. I’d like to see a series of blogs about the use of various cell salts?

  10. April says:

Joette – thank you for the work that you do, and your blogs! I am confused and hope that you can clarify for me the difference between cell salts and homeopathic remedies. I bought the Top 100 Remedy Kit from your website. Are they cell salts? Do cell salts look like little homeopathic pellets?

    1. Cell salts are a sub-catagory of homeopathy and are usually used in lower potencies, such as 3, 6 or 12x.
The kit you purchased carries only 30th and 200 potencies. We carry a cell salt kit of the 12 cell salts in our office if you’re interested, or you may purchase them individually at most grocery, health stores and large pharmacies.

  11. Liz says:

Thank you for the reminder about this powerful cell salt!

  12. Dear, thanks to all useful knowlladge .

  13. Lisa says:

I experience a lot of muscle pain related to Lyme. Would you recommend trying Mag Phos, or something else?

    1. It might be worth checking out, but there are other remedies and protocols that deal with Lyme on a deeper level. Should you be interested in discussing this further, you may contact my office.

  14. VIVEK RANE says:

please kindlly sugest me homiopathy medicine for frozen shoulder due to degeneration of cervicle verteba C4 and C5 and C6 and C7
PLEASE REPLY ME ON MY EMAIL
    THANK U

  15. This would require taking a full case by a homeopath.

  16. Tata says:

    Dear Joette,
What you think can homeopaty help in menopause.
I feel disgusting: flushing, fever, sadness, dry sking, drowsiness, irritability. What to do?
    Thank you!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Homeopathy has a sterling reputation for dealing with menopause, but it is often a case by case situation. Should you be interested in speaking with me for a few minutes to determine whether you would like to work with me, feel free to contact us via this site or by calling my office.

    2. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Homeopathy has quite the reputation for women suffering from menopause, however, it is usually person specific. Should you be interested in speaking with me for a few minutes to see if it would be a fit for you to work with me, you may call my office to schedule a free conversation.

  17. Kimberly says:

    Hi Joette!

I found this article a few weeks back. Thank you, thank you, thank you! I have been experiences terrible periods on and off – vertigo, PMS, cramps, hip pain, ovulation pain. I started taking Mag Phos and this time my period snuck up on me. I didn’t have any of the telltale signs of it! It has been so much easier to deal with. I love this little cell salt!!!

I wanted to ask you for a clarification if I could please. I am somewhat new to learning about the cell salts and am hoping to purchase your cd on it. I know I tend to be low on magnesium. Are these cell salts providing my body with the magnesium it needs if I take it three times a day as it says on the bottle? Or is it helping me to absorb and utilize the magnesium in my diet or in another magnesium supplement? I am just not really clear on which that way it is. Is this cell salt only suggested for occasional as needed usage, or can I use it daily for a long period of time?

Thank you so very much, your knowledge and work in spreading this important information is invaluable.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I’m thrilled that you have been helped by this simple little cell salt.
It helps the body utilize the magnesium that is already available via foods, etc. That’s the best part! And,especially cell salts, can often be taken daily until its forgotten. What I mean is that if one forgets to take it, its probably no longer needed, given that the symptoms are no longer there as reminders.

So intelligent. So elegant. So effective. THAT’S why I love homeopathy. Pls pass on this blog and the good news.

  18. Kimberly says:

Thanks for the reply! If I understand what you are saying correctly, I could take it in conjunction with my magnesium supplement and it will make it more effective and make the magnesium in my food more available. It really does help with pain as you wrote. I keep it on my counter and take it as I feel my body needs it when there is a clear symptom. A blessing in a bottle! 🙂

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I don’t bother taking gross magnesium, because it doesn’t correct the problem, it simply supplements, while Mag phos 6x has a history of correcting the magnesium problem.

      1. Angie says:

Thank you for ALL you do for us, Joette! I am forever grateful. 🙂

I would like to ask you..How do you know you don’t need to take Mag Phos (6x in this case) to correct the magnesium problem? In other words, other than a lab test, how does a person know she/he doesn’t need to “supplement” with Mag Phos 6x anymore? Are there any kind of markers to let us know we have enough magnesium in our bodies?

        Thank you so much!

        1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

When the symptoms are gone, the need has been eliminated.
It is an important aphorism of homeopathy.
          Study. Study. Study.

  19. Jackie says:

Does this interfere with other meds ?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

      Homeopathy doesn’t interfere in general.

  20. Jackie says:

I suggested this to a 23 year old dancer who often has severe monthly cramps when her period starts, causing her pain and fatigue, with the need to lie in bed with a hot water bottle and/or motrin. Every so many months, vomiting accompanies it. She has been trying it for 3 months with slight improvement. Would you suggest a higher dose or another remedy?

    Thank you!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

When there are accompanying symptoms, such as vomiting, another remedy altogether will be needed; actually two. I don’t know when I’ll be writing about this in this blog in greater detail, but should you be interested, this week my new on line course called Feminopathy: How YOU Can Correct Female Ailments Using Safe, Inexpensive and Effective Homeopathy will become available. A notice will be sent to you in your email.

  21. Kelly S. says:

My mom gets these, charlie horses, usually only once but occasionally two or three times at night when she’s in bed. But she may go a week without getting them or may get them for two or three nights in a row. They’re relieved by stretching them out or eating straight salt (just as quickly as the remedy), but could she do a regimen to stave them off so she doesn’t get them at all? Thanks so much!! 🙂

    1. Kelly S. says:

I guess I’m asking — what would a proactive regimen be? Once a night, once a week, or start daily then go to weekly?

      1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Its used only while needed and then for a few weeks after and its usually taken twice daily.

    2. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

When cramps are that prominent, I like to use remedies on a regular basis until they’re completely abated. In some folks it takes weeks. If they return, it means its time to take them up again.

  22. Tracy says:

Would this work for Restless leg ?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Not to my knowledge. We have other strategies for RL.

  23. I have mag phos 30 would it work the same for leg cramps ?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

      It often does.

  24. Andrea says:

Would this work for pregnancy related muscle cramps in legs, or does it need to be taken with the onset of pain?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

If its a frequent symptom, it often helps to take the remedies daily. If its infrequent, then as needed is best.

  25. Kimberly says:

Hi Joette, My 30 yr old daughter is havjng spasms which are in the lower abdominal area, it causes her to have very painful bowel movements like contractions. Would mag phosphoricum be a good fit for her? SHE had this before about 6 months ago too, and it eventually went away. THANKS for any help. W

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Mag phos is one of my favorite medicines and is often a good place to start.

  26. Rabea khan says:

Hi. Can a person take magnesia phos 6x over a prolonged period ? For example lets say for 40 days? The person for whom im asking has cramping and pain on the right half of the body and magnesia seems to work. Will it completely alleviate the problem if she takes it for 40 days? Thanks.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I can’t tell you how far it will take her but one of the determining factors is whether its acting. If it indeed helps then the number of days matters not.

  27. Shelley says:

Would Mag phos 6x work for zapping pains on a spot on the scalp with soreness that come about every 20-30 seconds?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

It’s not the 1st one I think of for those kinds of pains. But what I love about cell salts is that they may be used here and there as a trial.

  28. Jerri Kotrulja says:

Hey Joette! For the hiccups, how many times can this be done per day? My friend keeps having recurring hiccups almost after every meal and then all night long. So if they sip the remedy and the hiccups disappear, can they make another cup and sip again until the hiccups are gone? Basically, if the hiccups come back 5 times per day, can they do this 5 times per day? Thank you!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Think of it this way: Homeopathy is medicine. So, think back when you had menstrual cramps in high school, when you might take Midol every few hours and of course, you’d halt its use when the cramps were gone. That’s the way we use homeopathy for an acute situation. And you’d want to do this until you discovered that the help is not longer available via that particular medicine.
      ‘Hope that helps.

  29. Jenntara Ward says:

Would this also be a good remedy for tics in children?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I’ve not used it for such.

  30. Ryan says:

I’ve had a persistent twitching in my left tricep for the past two days. I tried this and within 10-15 minutes it stopped for a good two hours. Thank you so much! Just a little relief was wonderful. The store only had 30 not 6. How often can I take it?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I urge folks to get the potency that I discuss in my blogs as well as the schedule. Having said this, we usually employ the remedy for this kind of situation as needed. SO as the symptoms return, so does the use of the remedy. After a while, a schedule will emerge that can be used as a template.

‘Happy to hear of your success.

  31. Rachel says:

Gave this a try for spasms due to pelvic floor dysfunction, round ligament pain and Braxton-Hicks contractions (I’m currently 23 weeks pregnant.) It worked– I was FINALLY able to sleep comfortably through the night! However, I felt nervous the next morning that perhaps I had overdosed on Mag Phos cell salt, since that many sips equals quite a few doses, and I had also been taking Mag Phos in the pregnancy cell salt protocol. Is it possible to take too much Mag Phos during pregnancy and how often can I take “Mug Phos”? Thanks so much!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

We use medicines as needed. So if the medicine acts, then we back off a bit. Usually this means e. few hours. Having said this, if it worked in the fashion you used it, you did the right thing.

  32. Khan says:

Hi ,m suffereing from intactable muscle spasm and incrucuationg pain for 8 years that goes from my lower back to thighs n down both the legs it gets relieved a bit only with heat but as sooon as heat is a Ag spasm is there ,,i have Had taken a lot of allopathic as well as homeopathic treatment but of no use .i feel as my back muscles are weak .and it’s fir this back trouble my activities are reduced my sleep is disturb I remain confused n forget common things my brain do not pick up things easily ..kindly help me out with right medicine n suitable dose

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I don’t offer personal advice on this blog. Instead, I offer tools so that readers can make their own decisions.

  33. Sara says:

Other than mag phos dissolved in hot water, some of your other articles, especially for pets and children state that a dose of a remedy can be dissolved in water to sip or spoon from. Can a dose of more than one remedy be dissolved in water together? It seems that the BP remedies taken at the same time could be, but what about others? For instance, an individual is taking Ignatia, Kali carb and Helloborus each twice daily. Can all three be dissolved in water together and sipped from as a dose? I am just thinking that could be more simple for elderly too. Thanks.

  34. Admin says:

Thank you for the detailed article! I fit the mag phos profile perfectly, but am wondering how to choose between the 6 x potency and 30 c for a three week bout, that is a recurrence from several months ago. I am really asking how does one decide between a 30 c potency and a cell salt for an acute condition with
the identical remedy? Thanks so much!

  35. Alanna says:

Is overactive bladder considered a spam in homeopathy? Is mag phos just for painful spasms? I searched the database here but I am coming up empty. There is no pain or UTI or anything as per tests, just frequency in a toddler who has no UTI history, no RX history and wasn’t overactive before. The dr described it as a spasm of sorts either causing a need to go or stopping the flow before fully empty. Not sure if this spasm idea quite matches may phos.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

We don’t try to come up with an analysis of what is happening but rather an acknowledgment of the obvious symptoms. Hence, we would call this condition bladder frequency because that’s what we know is presenting.

Having said this, if there are indeed spasms, MP may be of service.

  36. Laura says:

    1. Would Mag Phos be a good choice for irritable uterus in pregnancy? 2. Would we take it in 6x 2D? 3. And if one had irritable uterus in past pregnancies, would it be appropriate to continue it for the entire pregnancy, even though it doesn’t appear every month as above? Thank you!!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

MP is specific for painful spasms. It would be used 2D when it’s a chronic condition and only as needed when an acute. We generally don’t use medicines that are not showing their need presently.

  37. Barb says:

Hi Joette my dog has severe muscle spasms in her neck right now I have her on mag phos 6 but not sure if it’s working my husband took her to the vet they gave her several meds but it doesn’t seem to help all the time I was watching on of your videos on Facebook you was talking about cuprum met will this be a better option and is 30c what I need or 6c thank you very much!!!

    1. Barb says:

Update I used cuprum 30c and hyper pref 1m and it worked like a charm no more spasms it took about 2 weeks I tried for a week she got better then 4 days it started back up then I put her back on for week longer and now it’s been a week and so far no spasms thank u for ur Facebook video I learned this from u after 200.00 in vet bills with no success they was talking muscle relaxers and some new thing that was going to cost 200.00 yikes but it costed me 16.00 that’s it!!

  38. Regina says:

    Hi Joette,
Was wondering if you’ve ever helped anyone with CRPS? (Chronic Regional Pain Syndrome). It’s pain that’s worse than childbirth, (I know), amputations, and even cancer care. It ranks 42 out of 50 on the Magill pain index. I have it. I take major allopathic meds for it but don’t want to keep taking them for the rest of my life. They are very strong pain meds if you know what I mean. I even tried your fibromyalgia treatment for months hoping it would help but it did not.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I have worked with this condition and have witnessed a good, mediocre, and no response. This is so for most chronic conditions.

  39. Regina says:

Thing is I have never really gotten a real diagnosis from anyone. All my doctors are just playing a guessing game. They say it “could” be CRPS. Well it “could” be a lot of things couldn’t it. I just know it’s some of the most unreal pain imaginable. And I know I’m on drugs I have no desire to be on permanently. God help me Joette! Good to know you’ve worked with it before.

  40. Courtney says:

Hi Joette! I may have missed this somewhere but my husband and I (we are ballet dancers and parents!) struggle with recurring back spasms…would nag phos be beneficial or is there something more specific to the intense spasm? We do go to the chiropractors and get massages as well but they they still come time and time again!

Thank you thank you thank you!!!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

Don’t use the specific word “spasm” as the name of the condition. Instead, use a more broad definition to find a remedy. That would be “back pain” or “overuse” or “muscle pain”, etc. Put those words into your browser along with my name and you’ll find what you’re looking for.

  41. Laura says:

I am having a spasm without pain for 12 straight hours on and off. No pain. On the left side under my ribs. Would this work for that? Should I have it looked it for something more serious?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

A good conventional diagnosis is always a good idea.

  42. Jane says:

Hi, iv been having persists t eye twitching in my right eye lower eyelid. What would you recommend for this as its highly annoying and oersustsbt and don’t go away. Thankyou

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

‘Sorry but I don’t make personal recommendations on this forum.

    2. help says:

Did you find anything to help? Having same issue with upper eyelid for over a month

  43. Chez says:

I’m having same eyelid twitching. Started an hour after my CV booster and been going on for months. Any recommendations?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

When we choose a homeopathic medicine it often matters not what the cause is.
Has your doctor contacted VAERS yet?

  44. Sara says:

Hi thanks so much for your giving so much information i’m really enjoying being a mighty member and loved your gateway courses I’m looking forward to taking the next course soon. Would you give mag phos for a child that started blinking his eyes all the time sort of like a twitch. I’d appreciate if you can answer me. Thank you so much

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, PHom M says:

Mag phos is a consideration but tics are more specific to the central nervous system not to muscles.
Should you be interested, check out my online course titled “Mindful Homeopathy” found by going to JoettesLearningCenter and scrolling down. It can also be related to food intolerances and other gut issues or exposure to toxins such as drugs or jabs.
