Impetigo on back of neck

It looks scary (and a little gross), but it’s not something to panic about!

Impetigo is a contagious skin condition that is usually caused by staphylococcus aureus bacteria (and more rarely, in tropical regions, by streptococcus).

It is very common in children and often spreads throughout schools. The small, red bumps turn into pustules that break and ooze and are just generally yucky.

It looks something like a Type I herpes outbreak but spreads much more rapidly.

Because impetigo is so contagious, it is best to quarantine the sufferer as much as possible, avoid touching the sores, wash hands often and use separate washcloths and towels.

When dealing with an impetigo infection, my first line of attack is to utilize the Banerji protocol.

The good doctors Banerji recommend Antimonium crudum 6C, two doses daily, along with a dose of Hepar sulphuris calcareum 200CK every other day.

Plan to continue this protocol for a while, watching for the eruptions to disappear first and then for the blackish scars to fade away over time.

This protocol has been found to work for approximately 80% of those who try it, but those who don’t respond might also consider Antimonium crudum 200C mixed with Arsenicum album 200CK taken twice daily.

The cell salts Kali Sulphuricum 3 or 6X and Natrum Sulph 3 or 6X will often prove beneficial as well and can be taken simultaneously, just separate them from the other remedies by a half hour or more. Twice daily doses will usually be sufficient in the case of impetigo.

Give the first protocol a good chance, say about 3-4 weeks, before switching to another. What you’re looking for, as always, is mitigation of symptoms.

Sometimes in homeopathy, particularly in cases of intense show of vital force such as in a very high fever (105 degrees) or such, remedies will act rapidly, often within minutes or a few hours.

For those issues that are not as intense or have lingered, it may take a few days to show improvement.

We want health to be restored and, most importantly, done so without drugs.

Why not use a little drug here and there?

Because drugs don’t cure.Stove Fire

They simply cover up.

I liken this to ripping out the smoke alarm from the ceiling of the kitchen while the pot on the stove is aflame.

Removing the annoying sound of the alarm only allows the fire to grow and overcome the kitchen. Why would you not just put out the fire?

That, my friends, is why I rely 100% on homeopathy for my family’s health care and have done so for more than 27 years.

Join me and together let’s put out the fires in your home, too.

I am a homeopath with a worldwide practice working with families and individuals via Zoom. I'm also a teacher and most importantly, a mom who raised my now-adult children depending on homeopathy over the last 31 years. I lived decades of my life with food intolerances, allergies, and chemical sensitivities until I was cured with homeopathy, so I understand pain, anxiety, and suffering. You may feel that your issues are more severe or different than anyone else’s, but I have seen it all in my practice and in my work in India. My opinion is that nothing has come close to the reproducible, safe and effective results that my clients, students and I have achieved with homeopathy.

Call today and learn how homeopathy might just be the missing piece in your health strategy.

I wish I would have read this artical a few years ago when my daughter had impetigo. Unfortunately I took her to the doctor because I didn’t know what to do and they prescribed antibiotics.
I appreciate your knowledge and willingness to share it with us!! Thank you for all you do!

  2. Virginia Irby says:

    Hi Joette,
Just wanted to let you know that I have been using the antimonium crudum for a couple patients with psoriasis and it is working like a miracle!! Thanks so much,
Do you have a protocol for a more challenging case of psoriasis on the back of the scalp that runs all across like a band from ear to ear?
    Thanks so much,
    VI

    1. Hi Virginia, My apologies for not responding sooner; I only just noticed this post.
I’m delighted your patients are responding so well.

For more incalicitrant psoriasis, I’d have to take the case because that’s when I’d need to incorporate more constitutional measures.

However, I think you’d find further information such as for psoriasis in one of my courses. In particular, Good Gut Bad Gut that is now in digital format and reduced in price. Should you be interested in learning more, let us know by calling the office and Jill will be able to walk you through how to incorporate these courses into your practice.

If not, ‘just happy to have you on board here.

  3. Laurie says:

Great article. I am going to pin this just in case. Wish I would have bought my kit from you this year instead of last year. I would love to have had “Cure Yourself and Family.”

  4. Isabella says:

Would this protocol work for something that is not technically impetigo, but looks similar and itches? Like certain types of dermatitis?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

The protocol I included is only for an infectious skin eruption. Dermatitis is best met with the protocol found in the blog I wrote on the subject of eczema. Just add “eczema” to the search bar on the top of the blog and you’ll find my favorite rems for such. If you go ahead and use it, I’d love to hear of your success.

  5. Julia says:

Thanks Joette! This is a great addition for my family health notebook!

  6. Megan Powell says:

Wow, I would probably freak out if my kid developed a rash like that…having this knowledge ahead of time will help if it ever happens, although I really hope it doesn’t…knock on wood!

  7. Debby Bruck says:

Dear Joette – Wonderful presentation. I’m wondering if there are seasonal outbreaks of impetigo. Does this disease show itself in the springtime when the flowers start to bloom and the weather warms up? People are outside socializing, which will spread the disease if it is highly contagious.

How many people will self quarantine? Is this skin eruption okay to be covered up or does it do best if exposed to open air and sunlight?

Wouldn’t a teenager get antsy to just watch and wait while taking homeopathic remedies for 3-4 weeks? Kids see time very differently and must seem like an eternity. Then, again, they might feel so ‘ugly’ or ‘contagious’ that it would detract from the self esteem. People today do not have a lot of patience to wait out the course of the illness.

Thank you so much for presenting the Banerji protocols. I’m in admiration of you for traveling to India and studying with the Contemporary

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Hi Debby, It’s so nice to know you’re there!

With regards to your questions; I’ve not noted seasonal outbreaks of impetigo, but it wouldn’t surprise me, so you prompted me to see what’s out there. Here’s a link on PubMed that discusses that it indeed comes about more often in the summer months in Africa and Asian countries. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16045681

The quarantine is usually imposed by schools but I agree, most people wouldn’t self quarantine.

I usually think of skin eruptions as something that would benefit from exposure to sun and air.
Yes, you’re right about teens. I hope that the parents have the fortitude to teach them the importance of waiting it out. Having said this, sometimes the change can occur even within a few days. We love when that happens!

Thanks for your thoughtful questions and comments.

      Take care

  8. Liz says:

Thanks for this information! I hope we never encounter this, but if we do, I will be prepared!

  9. Gabe says:

Is this remedy ok while nursing?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Homeopathic remedies are not only ok while nursing, but it is the ideal time to take them. We use homeopathy for pregnant women, newborns, children, the elderly, pets, wildlife, livestock. I can think of no inappropriate time to employ this medicine.

  10. S. L. Soltes says:

I so wish I had known about this when I was in my early 20s and came down with a few bouts of impetigo. I was working in a hospital and ended up having to take antibiotics for two nasty rounds. Now, I’m glad that I do know the protocol simply because skin issues are so very difficult to heal. Thank you.

  11. Good day! I know this is kinda off topic but I’d figured I’d ask.
Would you be interested in trading links or maybe guest writing a blog post or vice-versa?
My website goes over a lot of the same topics as yours and I feel we
could greatly benefit from each other. If you happen to
be interested feel free to shoot me an email.

I look forward to hearing from you! Great blog by the way!

  12. Ulanda says:

Is this dosage good for children?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

The frequencies used in homeopathy are generally across the board for newborns, to the elderly. The same holds true for the # of pills.

      1. Ulanda says:

Thank-You. My 3 1/2 year old has impetigo. I have the antimon crud but only 200C; of which I gave her four of those, along with the Hep Sulph. So then I repeat the Antimon later today and the Hep Sulph the day after tomorrow?
Also, is the 200C of antimon sufficient at 4 pills, twice daily?
As well, as far as the Kali Sulf and Nat Sulf, a nice lady I just met suggested her taking 2 of each of those twice a day for her. Sound about right?
And, how long until I see results? My husband is worried and would like to get a prescription, and honestly, so am I. It’s spreading all over her back and looking pretty rough 🙁

        1. Ulanda says:

As well, the Hep Sulph 200, 1 pill twice a day enough for her?
It does say on the bottle 2-5 twice a day but I was recommended one pill twice a day by this lady I think is a patient of yours.
I just want to do this right. Super nervous about it.

          1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Please read the above response regarding the number of pills taken as a dose. The frequency is dependent on the illness and its ferocity and the information I give my clients (not patients) is specific to them.

  13. Ulanda says:

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I’m happy to offer information that folks can use to help their families, but I can not take specific cases in this setting. If at anytime you feel you’d like to learn more, I have on-line courses or you may work with a homeopath.

      1. Ulanda says:

Yes, clients. I actually think I remember her saying she is learning under you. Anyways, sorry for all the questions, you can delete them if you’d like. I was just super nervous but I spoke to her and trust what she told me is just fine.
        Thank-You for this article 🙂

  14. Michael says:

Thank you for this information. I’m looking forward to trying the remedies you recommend. I’ll let you know what happens.

  15. julie says:

Hi there I have had antibiotics but I still have some sores which aren’t infected what do you suggest?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Whether antibiotics have been used or not, homeopathics can be used as well. Choose the one that fits the case most closely.

  16. kim says:

    Hello,

Great article, even for the homeopathy novice. I have severe Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. I had a big flare up a couple of weeks ago, leaving me bed bound and feeling as if I’m suffering from a terrible flu. Along with this flare up is a stubborn case of impetigo. I’m wondering if this is just an opportunistic infection OR if I have a low-grade, systemic staphylococcus infection that’s actually aggravating my illness. In lieu of a staph vaccine, I’m wondering if homeopathy might help. I’d be curious as to what you think.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I work with folks every day and observe hundreds daily in Calcutta who suffer from long term chronic conditions. And for as long as I have been studying this medicine(29 years) I am consistently blown away with how effective it is. On a personal note, I have had a serious bacteria infection myself that has been completely resolved after decades of conventional medicine that only made matters worse.

If you’re asking me if I think that homeopathy has the capability of addressing long term chronic illness that is accompanied by or attributable to an infection, my answer is that I have seen and experienced the remarkable faculty of this medicine time and again.

  17. Paula says:

Really appreciate your blog, checking it and the Banjeri Protocols regularly. Sometimes, they help, sometimes not so much. Two month ago I had a severe upper respiratory illness and tried following the protocols for cold and flu, after 5 days and no help, 24 hours of an antibiotic made all the difference. However, I’m now trying your protocol for perimenopause for me and insomnia for my husband and hopeful they will help. Now to the Imeptigo: never before has our family seen it until now. my 7 year old has a severe case all over his face, rapidly spreading to eyes and ears. We started the Keflex per our doctor’s recommendation because he was absolutely miserable and beside himself in discomfort. I am also doing Hepar 200c and Antimodium crud 6 twice a day. Wondering if I can over do it because he wanted a third dose of each today. Do you see problems with both the remedy and the antibiotics? I am not even convinced that the antibiotics are helping, and not sure how long to give the remedy. Thanks for any further insight you can give.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

The homeopathic will not interfere with antibiotics, but you’ll not know which one is acting and reading symptoms is the best way to direct you to the next step. Antibiotics suppress this information. I’m not saying you should not have used them, just telling you that there’s not as much benefit to using homeopathy if you don’t know how often to administer, when to stop and/or change gears.

As for the protocols; if you don’t have the flu nor a cold and instead, its a sinus infection, chest cough, strep throat, etc and you use a protocol for flu and cough, it will likely not work. One of the most important aspects of treating yourself and family is knowing for certain what you’re treating.

    Thanks, Joette! <3

You’re welcome! Pls pass the information on to friends and family.

  19. Jennifer says:

    Hello Joette,
I was just recommended to check out your blog! I’m excited to see all the great info here!
How do I know the difference between impetigo & rosacea? I’ve been battling something that has spread to my whole chin. My regular practitioner said, at first it was impetigo, then she said rosacea, now we are unsure. It’s been 9 long months. Any info you can give to be able to help identify it would be greatly appreciated. ? Thanks, Jennifer

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

You ought to see a seasoned dermatologist to get a diagnosis.

  20. KSMom says:

Would this protocol be worth trying on a suspected MRSA boil? I am hoping since I happen to have both of these remedies on hand, and they are both a form of staph….

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

MRSA needs to be approached differently.

      1. KSMom says:

        Thank you for clarifying 🙂

  21. Matt says:

Could one employ Arsenicum album 6 + ant crud 6 twice daily + hepar sulph 200 once every other day? And add in calc carb 200 & sulphur 6 once daily to boost immunity & deal with rashing that doesn’t smell good?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Without knowing the full case, I can’t say for certain if your choices are correct, but they seem pretty well suited to the symptoms. I’d make a couple of changes: Make sure the person is hot or has burning pains before considering Sulphur. I find that Psorinum is often a better choice for odors and immunity problems. Psorinum is generally cold.
      Also, HS might be overkill.

  22. Matt says:

Okay so Arsenicum album 6 + ant crud 6 daily would be enough to take away staph infections? And calc carb 200 daily for immunity improvement? What do you mean by Psorinum is generally cold? As in the affected areas are cold rather than hot? The affected areas are worse when she gets hot & worse when clothing is removed & worse lying down.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

As long as it is indeed impetigo, then there’s an 80% chance that the protocol will act. The Banerjis tell us this from clinical observation.

CC ought to be used only for someone who has compromised immunity. That is, someone who gets repetative colds, has allergies or catches this or that too often.
The person who needs Psorinum experiences cold.

  23. Matt says:

Okay so calc carb 200 should be used daily or every other day with this protocol for someone who has allergies & skin infections? And how do you know when to stop calc carb, when there are no more perceived allergies or infection? And what happens if you use hepar sulph 200 one time at the beginning before starting the other combination due to an infection since you indicate HS 200 for infected skin? Would this be beneficial?

  24. jessica l kelleher says:

Is it okay to use the 30c for the Antimonium for a few days while I wait to receive the 6c?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I use specific potencies becuase I have experience with them. I can’t tell you if it would act in 30.

  25. Lynn says:

Good morning! Heaps of great info here, thank you! Question. When using the impetigo protocol, when would the person NOT be contagious anymore? Is it the same as if you were taking an antibiotic, 48hrs? When they stop blistering and turn to scabs? Yikes, my children never had this! Thank you!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I’m not an infectious disease expert, but it is written in most dermatology books that once they scab over, it is pretty safe.

  26. jessica l kelleher says:

Happy Thanksgiving! My one son has been battling a mild case of impetigo since september. Starts as just pimples dots but sometimes they will scab/crust over. Seems that the intitial protocl helps get rid of it when it gets more crusty, it but then he still continues to get pimples in other parts of his face (he is 7). Now my second son has it, seems to be responding well to initial protocol so not too concerned for him.. Should I try second line treatment for my 7 year old you think? Just not sure when to switch over. Its been 2-3 weeks for him. Hard to tell if improvement or not being that the spots keep popping up but they do heal with treatment, so not sure?? And is it fine to just switch? I think I read in my materia medica that aresenicum is antidote to Hepar?

  27. Lauriellen S. Bonga says:

I live a drug free life. My 14 month old son has never had drugs in his system. About 6 months ago a friend sent me one of your posts and I’ve been reading when I can. I actually live in India. My son has just gotten impetigo and the first place I looked was your website. We got the Banerji’s protocol and just finished day 3 but the impetigo is still spreading. I’m so scared to wait but reading your posts helps me have courage. Thanks Joette.

  28. Rachel says:

Love this information! What would you suggest if I only have the 30c doses of the protocol?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I always say that if you hope to see results that I”m accustomed to witnessing, use the protocol as its written.

  29. Megan says:

Hi Joette, thank you so much for all the wonderful information you provide here. My daughter(15 years) is suffering from a host of skin ailments. She has had impetigo come back in her armpit area. She has athletes foot. Now she had keloids where she pierced her ears last year. I began treatment for the impetigo months back but she didn’t take it as regularly as she should and it never cleared up but never really spread either. So we decided to stop that for the time being and started taking Thio twice daily for the keloids and anti crud 6 mixed with Arsenicum 200 twice daily for the athletes foot. She has been taking it all for a week and a half.. But now her impetigo has flared up big time! Theoretically couldn’t one give a dose of hepar Sulphur 200 every other day to help with that if they are already taking the anti crud 6 twice daily which is the banerji protocol for impetigo? Thank you

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Are you a student of my course “Skin the Ubly Truth”? If not, I urge you to consider taking it since I teach simple conditions on my blog but when they become complex, you really need to know more deeply what to watch for. And that’s where the courses come in.

  30. Megan says:

No unfortunately I can’t afford to take a course at this time. It’s a struggle to afford the medicine but it is well worth it! My parents gave us a remedy kit for Christmas and it has saved us so much money! Thanks again for so much free information. I can’t tell you how many times your new articles/emails have arrived right in the knick of time!! I try to pass along the message of homeopathy to all my friends and family.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

‘Happy to hear that you’re finding my blogs, etc. are useful and that you’re passing along the good word.

  31. Laura Zylak says:

Hey Joette! My daughter has had impetigo for 10 days-I did not know what if was for the first 4 days and then started your protocol of the Anti Crud 6c 2x/day and Hepar 200 once daily. I have used colloidal silver, started Manuka honey, Argentum Metallicum gel and it is continuing to spread and not getting better. Should I use the remedies more frequently?

    1. Hélène says:

      Oh wow
My almost 15yo has impetigo. I put manuka on then got the remedies then started putting silver on also (and by mouth some). So similar to u.
What happened with you? Did it resolve? Hers is sorta. But they’re oozing and crusting now whereas they weren’t.
I don’t have 200C for the hepar just 30C but it’s been 4 days now of the remedies so maybe it’s the hepar is needed?
      Pls do reply!

  32. Talie Tamir says:

I have hepar sulph 30c, will using that be effective instead of the hepar sulph 200ck? I ordered the 200ck, but it doesn’t arrive for 2 days.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

It may indeed be useful in the short run but replace it with the correct potency as soon as it arrives.

      1. Talie Tamir says:

Wow! Thank you for your quick response!!! Will do!

  33. Raquel says:

    Hi Joette,

If one is treating for eczema using the 1st line BP (Hepar/Ars/Coffea/Psor) and contracts impetigo during treatment, does it make sense to temporarily suspend the eczema protocol and treat the acute condition until much better and then resume the eczema protocol?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Impetigo is generally more important to treat than eczema but sometimes that’s not the case.

  34. Anna says:

Dear Joette, thank you for such beneficial information.

    I wanted to get some clarification for the dose;
“Antimonium crudum 6C, two doses daily”

Would that be 1 dose in the morning and 1 in the evening?

    or… 2 doses together?

    Thank you.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

      Approx. 12 hours apart.

      1. Anna says:

Thank you for the quick reply

  35. Aimee says:

Would this protocol work for folliculitis? Thanks

  36. Kim says:

Hello Joette!! Would you suggest anything to help if pain from the sores are presenting?
