How Embarrassing!

Rethinking Detox, Joette Calabrese

Have you ever had one of those experiences when someone you had been hoping to impress caught you in an embarrassing moment?

I hadn’t been married to my husband for very long when my in-laws came to visit.

One morning, I was sitting in the breakfast room chatting with my father-in-law.

Without giving it a second thought, I opened a cabinet door to reach for the supplements I usually took with my morning meal.

Maybe it was because I was distracted by talking to him, or perhaps it was because my schedule and organizational methods had been disrupted by the visit, but I couldn’t find the supplement bottles I needed.

I searched through the kitchen cabinet, moving bottles around like puzzle pieces, but the bottles I wanted weren’t there. So, I opened the next cabinet. And the next. And the next.

Now, you have to understand, this wasn’t a tiny breakfast nook, it was a substantial, cabinet-lined room. Floor-to-ceiling cabinets on two walls. And these cabinets were packed full of supplements.

Vitamins, minerals, supplements, amino acids, enzymes, flushes, cleanses, colonic detoxers: You name it, I had it.

There was a lull in the conversation, and I glanced over to notice that my father-in-law was watching me.

The expression on his face, a single raised eyebrow, caused a wave of embarrassment to wash over me.

This was the man who had raised my husband. He was a scientific man, an engineer — very “common sense” and direct. When I saw myself through his eyes, I realized how peculiar this must seem.

In all the time I had known him, the years during which I’d been choking down those supplements, nothing in that cabinet had really done anything for me.

He knew I was still struggling with my health. He’d witnessed everything I’d been doing, all the money I had spent and treatments I’d tried, yet he knew that I still wasn’t well.

It’s not like we had a lot of money to throw away. With his engineer’s brain, I knew he could calculate fairly accurately how many hundreds (perhaps thousands) of dollars’ worth of supplements those cabinets represented. All for what?

Was my face red! I was a slave to “natural” pills, and now my father-in-law knew it.

(Believe me, there was no way I was going to let him discover there was a whole other wall of cabinets chock-full of pills he hadn’t seen yet! In fact, I considered sneaking back in the middle of the night to put locks on all the cabinet doors my in-laws hadn’t already seen inside!)

My father-in-law never said anything about my supplements that morning. He didn’t need to; his raised eyebrow said enough.

Sometimes we need these moments of briefly seeing ourselves through another’s eyes to take stock of what we’re doing and consider a new direction.

I didn’t turn on a dime but looking back, I now see that singular moment of shame as the beginning of the turning point for me.

Nowadays, I believe that eating a delicious, healthy, sensible diet is much better — and more effective — than taking dietary supplements. I came to this conclusion for a lot of reasons.

One is that I grew tired of spending so much time and money on supplements that had a questionable effect on my health. It was exhausting attempting to keep track of which supplements to take when: some with breakfast, some with dinner, some on an empty stomach, some together, others apart, etc.

And then there were the relentless and confusing updates:

“You should take CoQ10! No wait, that’s ubiquinone, and it’s not well absorbed. Throw that away and take ubiquinol instead. Are you taking B-12?”

“Yes.”

“What form is it?”

“Cyanocobalamin.”

“That’s no good! Throw that away and take Methylcobalamin!”

It seemed like every day I had a new list of what I should be taking. Old, mostly-full bottles collected dust on the shelves while I kept purchasing each new, presumably better supplement du jour.

And while we tend to think of health supplements as natural and harmless, they can have a deleterious effect.

Curcumin, for example, at dosages too low can be inflammatory and at dosages too high can be immune-suppressive or even cause DNA damage.

Calcium supplements can cause constipation, gas and bloating. Both calcium and vitamin D supplements can contribute to kidney stone formation.

Many have complained of anxiety, restlessness, irritability, and even panic attacks associated with B-complex vitamins.

Plus, I haven’t even mentioned concerns about additives, such as magnesium stearate, employed in the production of supplements.

I diligently took Fermented Cod Liver Oil until I could no longer stand the burning it caused in my throat.

When I started hearing negative feedback from clients about their adverse reactions to it, I became increasingly wary.

Dr. Kaayla Daniel has now shown — quite conclusively, in my estimation— Fermented Cod Liver Oil, once the most happening supplement of choice, is likely to cause more harm than benefit to most.

But what if eating a healthy diet isn’t enough? What if you have an imbalance to correct?

That’s where homeopathy comes in.

Homeopathy is medicine.

I believe that homeopathy is a better, more direct way to uproot illness and achieve our health goals. That’s why I kicked my vitamin and supplement habit and now use homeopathy almost exclusively.

To prove my point, try this the next time you feel nauseated after taking all the stuff you thought was good for you: Ipecacuanha 30 (Ipecac for short), twice a day until the nausea subsides.

Then join me and many other passionate students and homeopathy devotees while we empty out those embarrassing supplement-filled cabinets to make room for the staples of well-designed, healthy family meals — as well as some tiny tubes of homeopathic medicines that can uproot our ailments once and for all.

Warmly,

Joette Calabrese

I am a homeopath with a worldwide practice working with families and individuals via Zoom. I'm also a teacher and most importantly, a mom who raised my now-adult children depending on homeopathy over the last 31 years. I lived decades of my life with food intolerances, allergies, and chemical sensitivities until I was cured with homeopathy, so I understand pain, anxiety, and suffering. You may feel that your issues are more severe or different than anyone else’s, but I have seen it all in my practice and in my work in India. My opinion is that nothing has come close to the reproducible, safe and effective results that my clients, students and I have achieved with homeopathy.

Call today and learn how homeopathy might just be the missing piece in your health strategy.

    Hi joette
What do you suggest for confirmed deficiencies of Vitamin D ? Or confirmed low b12?
    Or a
Condition called Pyroluria with low B6, low Zinc and evening primrose needed ?

Thank you for all you do!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Pertaining to the 1st question, what is the disease?

Hemoglobin diseases need to be treated with the appropriate homeopathic medicine.

  2. Cari says:

Is there ever a time when you are on board with supplements? I live in a northern climate and can’t make enough vitamin D by sunlight exposure. Is there a homeopathic treatment for that? Or in that case would you say it’s ok to take vitamin D?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I would not take any synthetic vitamins. Instead, Vit d is happily found in lard, tallow, duck fat, etc that I make into pie crusts, biscuits and such. Then there’s butter, butter and more butter.

  3. Tiffany says:

Joette, I have relied very heavily on your expertise in both homeopathy and nutritious foods. Am I to understand that you don’t take ANY type of cod liver oil anymore? What supplements, if any, do you take?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I used to give my children fermented cod liver oil. Then I gave them plain cod liver oil. Then I counted on simple nutrient-dense foods to do the heavy lifting.
My children are adults now and they and I don’t take any supplements. Instead, we eat whole, homemade foods. But we also dine out at restaurants from time to time that we like and trust.

  4. Judy says:

It looks like WAPF still promotes CLO and FCLO despite Dr. Daniel’s concerns. https://www.westonaprice.org/health-topics/cod-liver-oil/cod-liver-oil-basics-and-recommendations/

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

      That’s correct. I disagree.

  5. Tanya says:

Thank you so much for your continuing insights and teaching! It is truly mind- and cabinet- decluttering. What are your thoughts on the high optimal vitamin D levels recommended in the medical and nutritional communities?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I believe using synthetic vitamins often causes new ills. I’ve worked with many who by simply halting their vitamin regiment improved.

      1. Hollie says:

What about using whole food sourced suppliments like the vitamin c from Radiant Life, just to give a boost when sickness arises? Also, I doubled my vitamin d levels from 15- 30 in 8 weeks by eating about a tsp of caviar a day. No amount of butter or lard or CLO was helping, but the caviar did wonders! I felt like a new person after that!!

        1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Yes, whole foods that have vitamins, minerals, live enzymes etc in them is the best plan. I eschew synthetics as a daily regimen.
          ‘Love caviar!

          1. Hollie says:

I forgot to ask the question I had regarding that. If I didn’t know that vitamin d was causing my depression and fatigue, would homeopathy have taken care of those problems without me doing anything about the vit d? Secondly, if it did take care of the problems and I never corrected the low vit d, would the issues arrise again or other issues come up related to the low vit d?

          2. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Low Vitamin D is not a pathology; depression is. We don’t treat to tests, we treat conditions, which in this case would be depression Once the depression is corrected there would be no reason to consider a low level of Vit D to be a problem because the condition that appeared to be connected would no longer exist.

The important question is, How do you know that depression is caused by low Vit D?

        2. Erin says:

What brand of caviar did you take? I’m seeing a lot of options, and some that are really expensive!

          1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I don’t recall but check out King Oscar cod livers. I had that for lunch yesterday and have grown to love it.

  6. Katarina Scheffer says:

How do you feel about supplementing with amino acids? They’ve helped me a great deal in the past. I much prefer them over antidepressant and anti-anxiety meds.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

When we have medicines of the caliber of homeopathic, everything else pales in comparison.
If amino acids, supplements, drugs, vitamins are holding a condition at bay, we stay with them until we can uproot the condition using homeopathy. Then we reduce and eliminate the homeopathic ones as well because nothing is needed.

  7. Maria says:

Good morning, is this medicine for nausea safe during pregnancy?

  8. Mayda says:

    Joette,
Besides the fact that you are truly a blessing and I can’t count the ways I have learned from you. While I am starting to fill my counters and some drawers with little brown glass bottles, I love those than the supplements, which i didn’t have many of anyway.
I laughed out loud for straight 5 minutes reading your article. How FUNNY!!
He probably raised his eyebrow to you and then went and prayed hard so you’d have better guidance. Whatever it was, THANKS to his raised eyebrow, because we surely NEED you here.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

It was uncomfortable at the time and yes, a blessing in disguise. Thanks for your kind words.

  9. Candie says:

My father (89) has anemia that they have tried iron supplements and usually fall back on intravenous shots to raise his blood iron. All tests show him very healthy, he has early onset dementia and seems to be shaky on his legs but heals quickly from any bump etc
Is there a homeopathic remedy for not absorbing his iron?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I strongly urge you to join one of our study groups (Gateway to Homeopathy) where students learn about such.

    2. Linda Woods says:

Candie, please read about Ferrum Phos cell salt. It should help.

  10. Barb says:

    Hi Joette,

I relate so closely to your story – as I too have opened my kitchen cabinet with family/friends visiting only to realize how insane I seem to them for the stacks of supplements I’m taking to “be well”. Isn’t it ironic to be the sickest of your community, and be taking the most supplements, following the most rigid of diets, and straying away from anything and everything that may be toxic to you and your family? I’ve recently worked with a seasoned homeopath who prescribed a remedy that is resolving almost all of my “mysterious” symptoms that have stumped doctors over the past 5 years and am just now starting to question my $300/month worth of supplements. I can wholeheartedly say that NOTHING has worked so brilliantly and completely over the years like this ONE remedy has. So, YES to everything you have said!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

‘Love it. A good homeopath is worth his weight in gold.

    2. Theresa Lesaca says:

      Barb,
Curious to know what remedy has brought you successful healing?
      🙂

  11. MaryEllen Bream says:

From the moment I first stumbled across your website, everything you said resonated with me. I saw myself in so much of it. The constant digging to get to the mysterious “root cause” of my illness, the thousands of dollars worth of supplements, the stress of being the weird mom who couldn’t stand to let her kid eat the cake at the birthday party…I was sold from the very first moment. Homemopathy removed all the stress, all the confusion, it’s just a better way, hands down. Thank you so much for sharing and creating courses for us.

    1. Lisa says:

Homeopathy is true healing and when you fully embrace it, everything else falls away. It is beautiful and simple and heals from the inside out: emotionally, physically, mentally. Nothing can compare. It has completely changed my life, and those 4 beautiful girls I am lucky enough to call my daughters. My husband is shocked constantly at how efficiently and painlessly homeopathy uproots our deepest hurts physically and emotionally.
I have been using homeopathy on our garden and it is amazing! It healed our soil miraculously and our plants are healthier than they have ever been. Just so very grateful for homeopathy!!!

  12. Iryna Boehland says:

Thank you for yet another helpful article, Joette!
I was searching your sire for myositis, that my child developed in her legs after the flu, but has no luck. Do you have any suggestions? I give her Arnica and Hyperic. for now.
    Thank you

  13. Wah! Great lesson you brought o the people and patients. My experience 37 years of Homeopathy I generally look for one available wherever I am/will be. No complaints but success only. Thank God Homeopathy helped my family so far.

  14. Sarah Grant says:

I am exactly at this point in my life and have been praying for a solid answer! I’m so tired of tracking our genetic mutations and trying to match up with supplements that won’t kill us if “yer doin’it wrong!!!”. All the b supplements make us nuta, potassium and magnesium are dis regulated, no selenium??? and what about unbound iron oxidization! I am already feeling SO much better utilizing the information I got in your cell salts class and studying your blog in depth. Thank you so much for making this available to us!

  15. Nicole Millhoff says:

Hi Joette, Do you think Rosita’s Ratfish Oil is a good choice? I hear it is has a mild flavor and supposedly has all the benefits of CLO plus a few more. I don’t like fish at all and struggle taking Rosita’s CLO. I plug my nose, take it, with nose plugged eat 2 jalepeno and garlic stuffed green olives or a cutie (small orange). Thank you for your thoughts. =)

      What a funny story!
I’m afraid I have no knowledge of that particular product.
