toilet2Forget the mornings … sometimes this awful sensation can last all day! However, not with homeopathy. Unlike many modern medical methods, homeopathy has no side effects or detriments to the baby. In fact, one of the best times to use homeopathy is during pregnancy.

Choose a Remedy

Choose one of the remedies below that most closely fits the symptoms at hand, and for most moms, if the remedy is taken twice daily for 1-10 days, there’s often a nice shift. That’s how we know it’s time to stop using the remedy. If the symptoms return, then it’s time to resume its use.

Pulsatilla 30C: This is a great remedy to start with for morning sickness. Indications supporting its use include a woman who is often weepy and clingy, wanting constant comforting and reassurance. She may feel better with open air but be worse after eating rich or fatty foods. Just as the windflower from which this remedy is made blows in the breeze, her symptoms are often changeable. They may, however, be worse in the afternoon or evening.

Nux vomica 30: The quintessential remedy for stomach upset also proves its usefulness in pregnancy. Vomiting may be spasmodic and sudden, often occurring right after breakfast. Constipation usually accompanies the nausea. Also, look for the typical Nux emotional picture of irritability and perhaps an intense focus on work.

Ipecac 30: This remedy often takes care of pregnancy-related nausea in short order. It can be taken a couple of times a day. Check out this blog that discusses Ipecac more in-depth. The key marker with this remedy is excessive salivation. Nausea and vomiting are nearly constant, with bile and mucus present in the vomit.

Sepia 30C:  Try this remedy if even nausea doesn’t dampen your seemingly insatiable appetite. Vomiting may lead to extreme exhaustion and prostration. As with Nux vomica, constipation may be present as well. Emotionally, this woman may be indifferent to her other children or partner, feeling overwhelmed by all her responsibilities, and may have ambiguous feelings about having another baby.

The great thing about treating morning sickness homeopathically is that the correct remedy often brings a permanent resolution to the annoying symptoms. Remember my cell salt protocol for pregnancy as well.

Many moms have told me that their nausea improved significantly once they started following this supplementation guide. Know that homeopathy has a sterling history of uprooting morning sickness. Then head to the kitchen and make room for plenty of grass-fed raw milk, cheese, meats, eggs and yogurt — and a pregnancy of freedom.

I have been where you are now. I’ve dieted, taken supplements, bioidentical hormones, essential oils, herbs – but nothing, nothing has ever come close to the reproducible, safe, and effective results my clients and I have achieved with homeopathy. I am a homeopath with a worldwide practice working with families and individuals via Zoom. I'm also a teacher and most importantly, a mom who raised my now-adult children depending on homeopathy over the last 31 years. I lived decades of my life with food intolerances, allergies, and chemical sensitivities until I was cured with homeopathy, so I understand pain, anxiety, and suffering. You may feel that your issues are more severe or different than anyone else’s, but I have seen it all in my practice and in my work in India. My opinion is that nothing has come close to the reproducible, safe and effective results that my clients, students and I have achieved with homeopathy.

  1. Lauren says:

Which one would be best coinciding with food aversions?

  2. Fumi Ito says:

160 pellets? Is that a typo? Thanks!

    1. joette says:

160 pellets refers to the number of pellets found in a bottle of the named Hyland’s bottles; not how many doses or pellets ought to be taken.

  3. Jenni says:

How do I share your blog entries on facebook? I’d love to share with my mama friends.

    1. admin says:

at the bottom of the post, there is a small icon with the facebook “F”, you can click that to share.

  4. Bio says:

I thought Sepia was not to be taken in pregnancy as it may cause miscarriage or spontaneous abortions.. and at all costs to avoid it, that it could act like Silicea and try to expel what it perceives as prolapse or foreign substance in woman’s body like Silicea.

Are you recommending certain potencies only for pregnancy such as 30c only or would you concede there are certain potencies to avoid with Sepia Off when pregnancy occurs. If so, only during the first trimester or not?

    Thanks,

    Bio

  5. joette says:

no concession. the reason i included the potencies in this particular blog is because potency matters here even more than usual… so does frequency, which is why i made a point of being specific. injudicious use of remedies is always cautioned against and using a higher potency, for too long or too often has been noted in the literature to be ill advised. The same holds true for Silica, Apis, Arsenicum, Nux vomica, Lachesis, Helloborus, etc. Posology (the study of potency and frequency) is key in homeopathy.

    1. Keri says:

Where can I find the recommendations for potency and frequency during Pregnancy? I used the Banerjii protocol for morning sickness, (Arsenicum 6C), and it helped. But the MS came back and I tried a few doses of Nux Vomica 30C today. It worked amazingly well!!!!

Now I am a little concerned. I only take it when the symptoms return. What is the limit?

      1. Keri says:

Is 10 days the limit? I just saw that. Is it O.K. to take more than 2 doses in one day if pregnant and nauseous? (SOS). What specifically is the concern?

        1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Homeopathy is medicine which it means it should not be repeated if its not appropriate.

      2. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Re-read the article and it gives you the exact specifications.

        1. Keri says:

I see the specifics now. I have read different information on different sites so it is confusing. I took 4 doses yesterday, (as per instructions on a different website), and it worked. Today I have only needed one dose so far. The Banerji protocol you mentioned in your course allows for an SOS, (with a different remedy). I was just curious what the concern is, is it proving the remedy?

I feel great today and have no issues. I have used homeopathy for over a year now and have never been worried about safety. Just my pregnancy brain overreacted when I read some of the comments. ?

          1. Keri says:

            “4” doses yesterday.

          2. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Its possible to cause a proving.

  6. Jodi says:

If you happen to have 2 or 3 symptoms listed from each of those 4 options (because you have terrible, horrible, no good, all day morning sickness) – should you/could you take all 4 remedies? OR just try one at a time?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Its generally better to use one at a time…the one that most closely represents your symptoms and then give it at least a week or so before considering moving to another choice. If there’s improvement, even slightly, give the remedy a chance to act fully with even more time.

  7. Jackie says:

Would Sepia still be worth a try if vomiting and constipation are not present? The other symptoms fit, along with indigestion and heartburn. I am taking the cell salt protocol, but I have not noticed a difference yet.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

‘No need to match every symptom to a remedy picture, but I can’t say that it is a well chosen remedy for you without taking your case.

  8. Hannah says:

    HI Joette,

I know you’re not a huge fan of vitamins but but during my first pregnancy I took vitamins and it was my best pregnancy. Now I’m on my fourth and would like to take something and am looking for a more high quality vitamin would you mind checking this one out and telling me if you approve! I think you’ve said you’ve only found a couple you would ever use. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000FGXLVE/ref=s9_simh_gw_p121_d4_i1?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=desktop-1&pf_rd_r=1KP0T4BE9QV3R7S5N3B7&pf_rd_t=36701&pf_rd_p=2079475242&pf_rd_i=desktop

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I urge women to stay away from vitamins and instead eat high quality, well sourced foods such as pastured eggs, grass-fed meats, raw milk, whole organic yogurt, plenty of raw or at least pastured butter and cheeses. One of the concerns in taking manufactured vitamins for example is the high amount of iron found in most prenatal vitamins which often causes high billirubin levels in newborns.

If you want to follow a supplemental program, feel free to download my CD, Baby Grande https://joettecalabrese.com/product/BabyGrande.html and follow the herbal and homeopathic cell salt recommendations. ‘Much less expensive and a more intelligent choice.

  9. Anke says:

    Hi Joette,

gee, wish I had known about homeopathy with my pregnancies – might have saved me a lot of toilet time…

Will keep this info for my growing girls though! While they often eye it (homeopathy) with suspicion still, they don’t refuse it when they are sick 🙂

Thanks once more for sharing your wealth of knowledge!

  10. Janelle says:

I was thinking that Pulsatilla should not be used often during pregnancy due to its ability to turn breech babies?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Yes, it corrects presentation, but I’m not clear on the connection you’re making.

  11. Bell Ruichardson says:

    For friend.
Women.Third pregnancy. First miscarried. Currently at 12 weeks. Has had history of complicated stomach surgeries. Has intolerance to most foods while pregnant (specifically white meat and sweets). Has lost ten pounds due to severe allday nausea and migraines. Deeper fear is being alone or loosing the baby. Wants to be social but this stops her from being able to rest and sustain her already low energy from lack of nutrition. Is not angry or irritable when pain is present.
Any suggestions on where to start? I would love to help her with homeopathy.
    Thank you either way.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I don’t take cases on this blog, but having said that, its hard for me to keep quiet when the answer could be right at hand. I’d certainly begin with a remedy for the nausea as laid out in this article. Often that will soften the fear, but if not, go to the article I’ve published on this blog https://joettecalabrese.com/blog/homeopathy-cures-grief-sadness-without-chemicals/ . I propose that more than one remedy be employed and you might find that these 2 ideas help.

  12. Melissa says:

Hi Joette, I don’t see Colchicum listed here as a remedy and I have heard it is one that is particularly helpful for morning sickness. Would that be one you would ever recommend?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

YEs, it is also a good one to consider. Its not my 1st choice, but certainly in the top 3-4.

      1. Melissa says:

Great! I tried Sepia for 10 full days and it didn’t touch it. I then went for Nat Phos for a few days, now on to try Colchicum! Thanks, Joette! 😉

  13. Ashley Corey says:

Is there any homeopathic to avoid during pregnancy? Is camphor too strong?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Stay away from Apis. Camphor does not have a history causing a problem as far as i know.

  14. A says:

Wondering about why the concern with Sepia for over 10 days? If it is working at 2x a day and it comes right back after discontinuing, can you take for longer? It’s the 30 and makes the morning sickness bearable vs. Laying on the couch ALL day and can’t even look at the kitchen. I don’t see any other sources that have concern with taking for longer than a week and a half. And if it’s not to be continued, would it be better to move to the Banerji protocol? Is that one more safe for continued use? Thanks for anything you can provide!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Without specifically taking the case, Sepia is a medicine we’re cautious about over-using during pregnancy. I don’t know what Banerji protocol you’re referring to.

  15. Juliet says:

Hi Joette, what is the recommended dosage for Nux Vomica? On the back of the bottle it says five pellets thrice daily but in your article you say ‘..if the remedy is taken twice daily..’. Is the recommended dosage on your website for pregnant women or should I follow the instructions on the back of the bottle? Can you please advise? I’d really appreciate that. Thanks, Juliet

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Anywhere between 2-3 times daily based on need is correct.

  16. Juliet says:

Thanks Joette. I’ve been taking the remedy twice a day for the past 4 days. The symptoms have greatly reduced and the vomiting sensation is bearable now. If I cross the ten day mark and the symptoms still exist, can I continue to take the recommended dosage? I know you said to not exceed ten days but I’m worried my symptoms may come back and since the medication has helped greatly, I was just wondering if I can continue to use it as my crutch to help me through my first trimester. If yes, I’ll go ahead and order another bottle since I don’t want to be without it at any point in time. Hope this makes sense. Thanks so much. -Juliet

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Once we know that a homeopathic medicine is acting, it can usually be taken for as long as needed.

  17. Chloe says:

So I just realized I am pregnant and I have been taking Sepia 200 in the early morning and afternoon. I’m definitely a sepia woman! It keeps me sane. I wake up fearful and overwhelmed; I take my Sepia 200 and I can get up and be calm. So now I’m reading that I need to be careful with sepia during pregnancy; since it seems like I need it so much could I keep taking it or had I better stop? I’m fearful of stopping because I don’t want to go to pieces… but could I have already hurt my baby?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Sepia may be used during pregnancy but ought to be used judiciously. I urge you to work with a seasoned homeopath.

  18. Amy says:

If a mom takes Streptococcinum for Group B strep the last month or so of pregnancy (according to the protocol), and she doesn’t test for it, is a proving possible if she was negative? Or are nosodes different? Just wondering, as I’m expecting number four, and eager to try this! (I didn’t know where else to ask this question)

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

When a homeopathic medicine is taken unnecessarily, there is always a risk of a proving. Nosodes are no different. A better choice would be to be tested sooner and use the medicine appropriately.

      1. Liz Hankkila says:

If I have already tested for gbs in my urine (at 16 week appointment), should I be doing the gbs protocol? I’m terrified to have more antibiotics but they say baby has even a higher chance of getting sick if the gbs already showed up in my urine in early pregnancy. I have yeast I’m trying to take care of with ars. alb.

        1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

This is something that cannot be discussed on this forum. Should you be interested in meeting with me, feel free to contact my office.

        2. Dorothy says:

Hi Liz, would you please share with me the protocol for gbs+and cholestasis? I’m 15 weeks pregnant and seems like we have similar problems with our pregnancies.I’m scared to be induced again and don’t won’t antibiotic IV that was burning my veins.

  19. Rachel says:

Tried Ipecac 30 starting around Week 6— symptoms seemed right but it wasn’t really moving the needle. Ordered some Tabacum 200 and switched to that middle of Week 7– BINGO. It took a couple days to fully kick in, but now I can make dinner and wash the dishes without feeling overly icky, and brush my teeth without gagging! WIN!! Thanks, Joette!!

  20. Sue H says:

Hi Joette When someone is having severe nausea during pregnancy and then gets the flu which is now causing flu symptoms ( vomiting, fever, aching) where can I find info. on the protocol for flu during pregnancy?
I searched for it on your website but not finding any blogs or info. on this issue. Hoping you can give me some help finding the info. Thank you

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Whether someone is pregnant with the flu, nursing with the flu is a child with the flu or elderly, it matters not. Flu protocols are generally the same for all.

  21. Prachi Joshi says:

Hello Joette, I have been prescribed Sepia 30c 2 pellets twice a day which helps to keep my food down a bit. But your article says otherwise for sepia, I am now really worried. I am 12 weeks pregnant and have been taking it for 5 days now. My evenings are the worst with constant nausea, throw-up, heartburn. In the evenings I constantly throw-up without any relief as throw-ups makes my stomach go nuts but at the same time I cannot even keep food down. After I go to bed at night I have to get-up once to throw up bile and acid and then only I can sleep, what can I do to get relief in the evenings? Please help. Thank you!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

I can’t take cases on this forum. given that you’re working with a practitioner, I urge you to report this to him/her so that it can be adjusted.

  22. Rachel says:

    Mrs. Calabrese,

Nausea while a woman is in labor has been present at nearly all of the births I’ve witnessed. Would you lend more weight to Sepia for nausea during birth, since this is such an extremely hormonal time? Thank you!

    ~ Rachel

  23. Rachel says:

*Oops, I apologize, I’d meant to ask also about Pulsatilla for nausea during the birth, not just Sepia. Do you likely give more weight to those remedies with the strong hormonal aspect for nausea during labor?

Sorry for the omission… Thank you very much 🙂

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

Yes; it offers another leg to the 3 legged stool.

  24. Mimi Straub says:

Joette should cell salts be started before the above remedies are tried or can they be started simultaneously? Also how long should one remedy be taken with no perceived benefits before trying a different one?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

There’s no particular order based on the category of the medicine. Its strictly based on the condition and its symptoms.

  25. Olena says:

Joette, THANK YOU so much for this article! Ipecac 30 proved life transforming to my friend, who is pregnant and is suffering from bad morning sickness.

Quick question for you: can Ipecac 30 be taken more often than a couple times a day if the symptoms are severe?

Thank you for all you do!
    Olena
