Is the Flu Bugging You?

Sunday worship in Kolkata. This is a temple on the Hooghly River in Kolkata, India. I am here studying with the Drs. Prasanta and Pratip Banerji

Aside from the many wonderful things I’m learning here at the homeopathy clinic, you might think the recent flu outbreak would make me glad to be in India! Actually, I don’t worry about the flu because I know homeopathy’s track record in treating it.

Even during the deadly Spanish flu epidemic of 1918, homeopathy came through with flying colors.  During a time when about half of the patients treated conventionally died from this infection, homeopaths reported a death rate as low as 2%

With such an impressive history, I know where to turn if I do succumb to the flu.

How do you know if you have the Flu?

But wait … how do you know if you’ve got the flu or just a run-of-the-mill cold? The flu tends to come on much faster with more intense symptoms. Colds may only leave you suffering from congestion or runny nose, but influenza brings body aches and fever as well.

It’s important to differentiate between the two because of the flu’s potential for complications. Especially in the elderly or young children, the flu can sometimes turn into pneumonia if not treated properly.

Influenzinum 30C as a preventative treatment for the flu

I’ve written about Influenzinum 30C in the past as a preventative treatment for the flu. That’s still a viable option, but at this point in the season, we need to start thinking about it as the go-to remedy if you’re exposed to someone with the flu.

It’s a favorite because it does not take a great deal of study to know when to use it. Influenzinum 30C can stand on its own or rotate with a remedy that specifically matches the symptoms of a person suffering from the flu.

Now we treat the disease

Utilizing this remedy is not based on the specific symptoms of the person but rather on the treatment of the disease.  Normally this is antithetical to classical homeopathic practice, but in the case of epidemics, we veer slightly from the usual procedure.  Dr. Robin Murphy, in the Lotus Materia Medica, says, “Influenzinum has with many practitioners taken the place of Baptisia as the routine remedy in epidemics.  It may be given in the 12c or 30c potency.”

Influenzinum is reputed to abort cases of influenza during an attack when given four times in one day for several days. Or, it works better yet when used as a defensive measure before contracting or after being exposed to the flu.

I am a homeopath with a worldwide practice working with families and individuals via Zoom. I'm also a teacher and most importantly, a mom who raised my now-adult children depending on homeopathy over the last 31 years. I lived decades of my life with food intolerances, allergies, and chemical sensitivities until I was cured with homeopathy, so I understand pain, anxiety, and suffering. You may feel that your issues are more severe or different than anyone else’s, but I have seen it all in my practice and in my work in India. My opinion is that nothing has come close to the reproducible, safe and effective results that my clients, students and I have achieved with homeopathy.

Call today and learn how homeopathy might just be the missing piece in your health strategy.

Thank you for this information. I have used influenzinum for years for myself and my family and we have been able to stave off the flu in most cases. I did, however, get a touch of pneumonia last year (first time ever) and was not aware that influenzinum was indicated even after developing flu symptoms. This is welcome information that I will share with family and friends!

Greater Kingston? Does that mean you’re in New York on the Hudson?

  2. Beth says:

I could say that I actually have a fond connection with the flu– last year when my family was suffering from it, I was determined to find something healthier to ease the symptoms. That’s when I found homeopathy and you!!! So I will always be thankful for that. This year when the colds hit, I pulled out my remedies and no one was any worse than a little rest couldn’t cure! Thank you Joette!!!

  3. Jill says:

Is it true there is a ‘fresh batch’ of this remedy produced each year, which may be slightly different than the previous year? If so, would it be best to purchase a new one each year, say, at the end of the summer, if it is to be taken as a preventative?

  4. Karen Little says:

I am wanting to plan for the coming flu season and I was reading what I could find regarding remedies. I see that you recommend influeninum 30C. I also looked at Ahh Choo the Flu! where you say to take this remedy 4 times/day for one day a week times 4 weeks, then the same one day of the month until flu season is over. Do you still recommend this protocol?
Also, when I searched for where to purchase it I saw that there is influeninum 9C which is for the current flu season, available Sept/Oct. What is the difference, besides the potency, and which do you recommend? Thanks!!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Just about any potency would do the trick. I’ve used them from a 6x to 200c and they never fail me. Yes, I like that protocol and have used it for years but there are many ways to approach the flu, using a different variety of remedies. So don’t feel hemmed in by only this one.

  5. Karen Little says:

Oh and some sites say to take thymuline with the influeninum. What do you say about that?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

      I’ve never used Thymuline.

  6. DeAnn says:

I also read that this remedy was made specific for each year like the flu vaccine so if you get a batch made a few years ago it may not be as effective. That information was just from reading the review on Amazon, though, so I’m not sure about the efficacy of those statements. I trust your opinion and knowledge more than the reviewers.:) What are your thoughts? Thanks!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

The reviewers on Amazon have a point. However, regardless of the intent of the manufacturers to get the right mix for the year, there’s never any way of truly knowing what group of viruses will be the ones that mark the particular season. (By the way this is also one of the reasons the flu shot is a hit or miss proposition.)
So some folks buy a new Influenzinum bottle each year. Others figure its close enough. I’m in the 2nd group. Probably because homeopathy is about homeo or similar suffering anyway, not exact suffering.

But if it is a particular worry, considering the cost of a new bottle every year, it might give you a bit more peace of mind to keep your stock up to date.

  7. Christen blade says:

Can this remedy be used for children under two? If so how would you give a child this to prevent the flu?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Homeopathics can be used for any age and they are used in precisely the same as for an adult, small dog, the elderly ,etc.

  8. Steve says:

Hi, What do you suggest for a 3 year old who gets a stuffed up nose at night (to the point that they can’t breath through their nose)? No other noticeable issues during the day – this just comes on at night. Thanks, Joette!

  9. Joe says:

We have the flu in our house. I’ve read so much on prophalactic use of influenziunum 30 that I’m totally confused. Can you help? I did the four doses in one day for each family memeber not yet showing flu symptoms (actually my son got two doses one evening and two doses the next morning because it was evening when we had confirmation on flu- is that ok? ) and then our local pharmacy said to give one dose per day every day until everyone one in the house is well. Do you agree since we know it is in our house or should we just do the four doses one day per week for a month? Am I giving it too much?

Also, when do you stop giving it to the person who actually has the flu? When the fever is gone and stops coming back at the 6 hour mark? Should I continue for a few more doses but spread them out to every 12 hours? or should I continue until her appetite comes back?? My daughter is no longer running fever and feeling generally well but still does not have a good appetite. She is coughing quite a bit so I also started Bryonia today. Thank you!

I am so grateful for your help! I am definitely joining/starting a study group and taking a course. I know homeopathy works but I need more knowledge on the details. You are empowering mommas! Thank you!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Four doses of Influenzinum in one day every day is more than is generally needed for someone who is not sick. Its better to use less than more. I’ll give you a simple answer to something thats sometimes a little more involved. Use the symptoms to determine when to repeat the remedy. To make it a bit easier, most of the time, a dose every 3-6 hours is a good way to administer during the flu, and yes, use a remedy that’s specific to the symptoms such as Bryonia.

What is preventive and treatment of swine flu

  11. Mayda says:

    Hi Joette,
Since I didn’t have Influenzinum on hand, I used your Rhus Tox/Bryonia protocol to treat all my kids with the flu including myself. We’re almost on the other side of the flu and I just got the Influenzinum. Do you recommend I give them this as the prophylactic protocol suggests? 4 doses in one day, once a week? and then once a month?
