Joette Calabrese

If you’ve studied homeopathy at all, you know Arnica montana like the back of your hand; it is an integral part of your homeopathy first-aid kid.

I’ve discussed it in my blogs and podcasts many times, as have several of my Moms with Moxie. (It’s easy to do a search for all the references to Arnica on my website, but just this once, I’ll give you a hand with this link.)

Because of your studies, you know Arnica montana is a little flower native to the Alps and other mountainous regions.

Similar in appearance to the common daisy, the Arnica flower and its leaves have been used for centuries as an analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and injury-recovery medicine.

As a homeopathic preparation, Arnica is invaluable after head injuries. You know it should be your first thought after a fall, especially when soft tissue is damaged, as it alleviates or even prevents bruising and facilitates rapid healing.

In fact, Arnica is one of the premier homeopathic remedies utilized in traditional hospitals! Many doctors — especially plastic surgeons — recognize the benefits of Arnica for reducing swelling and bruising postoperatively.

You know you can purchase Arnica in a topical form, such as Boiron’s Arnicare® cream or gel in almost any drugstore or grocery store. Arnica is becoming ubiquitous.

So, you know Arnica.

Or DO you?

(I wish I could insert suspenseful music here!)

Years ago, when I was learning homeopathy, my mother only remembered one remedy: Arnica. It was her down-and-dirty, go-to remedy … for anything! “Oh well, it worked for this or that, so I’ll just use that Arnica again!”

Through her wide-ranging application of Arnica 200, we discovered it worked beautifully for her as a sleep aid! Not something we usually associate with Arnica, right? But, boy, did it work!

We all know the day after a bad night’s sleep can be rough. We feel beat up, fatigued, as if we’ve been hit by a snowplow, and the plow backed up over us again to see what it hit!

Many times, the “day-after” can seem insurmountable. Especially if we’re at work with a deadline or at home with a demanding family, relieving fatigue can become an emergency! That's Arnica too.

You may think of this medicine for jet lag, too.

Arnica montana is tremendous for relieving fatigue. First thing in the morning as I realize I didn’t sleep well, I utilize Arnica 200. I may repeat the remedy until I am functioning properly, perhaps every six hours or so if needed.

I share a remarkable story in my materia medica about my teaching a severely fatigued professional athlete about Arnica montana. He had been a skeptic of homeopathy until his fatigue was resolved within about 40 minutes after his first dose!

Because of his experience, he became one of homeopathy’s best evangelists.

So, yes, Arnica is indispensable for your first-aid kit of emergency remedies for all the reasons you already knew! Plus, an extra tube of pillules might be a necessity on your nightstand for times when sleep is elusive.

It's also a capital medicine for… wait, I could go on about it for nearly an hour. And that's precisely what I plan to do on my 8 PM Monday night Facebook live in a few weeks, so stay tuned.

Once you are feeling refreshed, remember to pass on the good news about homeopathy!

Warmly,
Joette Calabrese

P.S. I seemed pretty confident you already knew a lot about Arnica, didn’t I? That’s because thousands of you have already taken advantage of my Gateway to Homeopathy I Study Group Curriculum. Arnica montana is well-covered — one of several remedies I discuss in the First-Aid Lesson in the curriculum.

For those of you who have not yet joined a study group, I highly encourage you to either join a group or start your own. It’s easy. The Gateway to Homeopathy I curriculum takes you by the hand, allowing you to learn my specific brand of Practical Homeopathy® in a supportive environment surrounded by other like-minded students.

If you have already studied Gateway to Homeopathy I, don’t forget to continue your education! There is so much more to learn in my new continuation of the series, Gateway to Homeopathy II. Continue with your previous study group or start a new one! Either way, you — and your family — will benefit from your increased competence and confidence.

I am a homeopath with a worldwide practice working with families and individuals via Zoom. I'm also a teacher and most importantly, a mom who raised my now-adult children depending on homeopathy over the last 31 years. I lived decades of my life with food intolerances, allergies, and chemical sensitivities until I was cured with homeopathy, so I understand pain, anxiety, and suffering. You may feel that your issues are more severe or different than anyone else’s, but I have seen it all in my practice and in my work in India. My opinion is that nothing has come close to the reproducible, safe and effective results that my clients, students and I have achieved with homeopathy.

Call today and learn how homeopathy might just be the missing piece in your health strategy.

  3. Danielle says:

I wake up every morning and feel like a truck hit me. Then it goes away in about ten minutes. The tremendous fatigue pops up and goes away at random points during the day. Is Arnica a fit for this? And is it used as SOS or for longer duration?

    Thank you!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I can’t tell you what is a fit for you on this forum. Usually its used in this fashion as an acute which means to stop when vmb.

      1. Danielle says:

        That’s helpful thank you!

  4. Kat says:

How awesome! Being a parent to small wilderbeasts, I will try Arnica for my post-sleepless nights. Who woulda thought!

  5. Jackie says:

I accidentally discovered that Arnica is a very effective sunscreen. I’m a cyclist and each spring, I need to reaclimate myself to my bike saddle. One year I decided that Aconite would help this process and I took some Arnica 30c on my way out the door and some more to take if I was going to be out very long. Then I realized that I didn’t get sunburned as I usually do each spring. I have since spent a week in the sun full time with no sunscreen except Arnica and I didn’t get sunburn!

      Thanks for your contribution.

  6. Rachel says:

Forgive me, it is probably obvious, but do you mean that your mother found Arnica helpful in falling asleep? I don’t quite understand what you meant by sleep aid. Thank you!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

For my mother, it was helpful with her insomnia.

      1. Rachel says:

Right now I’m in the midst of an unpleasant bout with bronchitis. I won’t go into all the remedies I’ve looked at and used, but I will say that my go-to-info from you, Joette is the one on Croupy Cough. This time (I’ve had this many times over the years) I’m experiencing the cough that comes from the tickle in the throat (trying Ferrum Phos 30 for that). This spasmotic cough occasionally gags me so badly I think -oh dear, what a way to go. After the first one of these dreadful coughing fits, I thought, This must be so hard on my eyes, my throat, my lungs, by heart, I think I’ll take Arnica to help all those tissues. Usually I take homeopathic cough syrup (for kids), but I’m trying to let the remedies I’m using go deep w/out suppressing the symptoms. For awhile my throat was so easily activated into the tickle-cough that I had to spit the remedy out because that is what was irritating my throat! I put more pellets into soak in water and that worked well. Also find dissolving papaya enzyme tablets in my mouth soothing for the tissues. So thankful for the huge amount of info you have online and for your passion for homeopathy. Such a blessing to all. candi

In your search engine write “Cough Joette Calabrese” and you’ll likely find the remedy in the very 1st entry that pops up. You’re looking for the word “gag” in the title.

      1. candi says:

I will do that ! Thank you IPECAC: Cough that Nags & Gags ! Okay I have that and have taken it. I’d read that before and forgot. Fortunately that has passed (know it could come back) and all is much looser and am actually blowing my nose !!! That hasn’t happened in years. Ipecac to stop vomiting. Saved a puppy’s life with this. He was vomiting (unknown reason) could not keep down water. This did the trick for him. I’m just so thankful and hopeful that this chronic problem will be fully resolved. My sister (77 & a ski instructor) has this too. Maybe I can convince her to focus on healing during the off season ! Bless your heart !

  8. Cherie says:

I’ve used Arnica for so many bumps and bruises but hadn’t considered it for some of these other ideas! Thank you! Would you consider Arnica a good fit for chronically strained vocal cords?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

It would not be my 1st choice, but it’s worth a good try.

  9. I discovered another use for Arnica quite by accident. I have a dog rescue here in Houston. I had just adopted out a 9 month old puppy to a great family eager to continue his natural rearing protocols. I had given them 2 remedies which I feel are indispensable for dogs – Arnica and Arsenicum Album. Puppy got an ear infection – red, painful and oozey. They gave him Arnica for the pain but to their surprise (and mine), in one day the ear began to dry out and heal on its own. Who would have thought? I have also used Arnica when I had severe tooth pain which worked like a charm. LOVE this remedy!

  10. Priya says:

I have recently started going to the gym, so initially I had all stiff muscle and fatigue, it became difficult for me to function the next day, then I remembered Arnica, have been taking it, and exercing also, it is much easier to function… I am planning to use it till I actually develop some muscle…

  11. Lisa says:

I recall you mentioned this as part of a trio… Ferr Ph 6x+Calc Ph 6x+Arnica 6c … on those sleepless nights and waking up feeling it! I love this trio…. it works well for me. I often refer others to it. Thanks, Joette, for helping Moms do their jobs by getting through the slumps. Love this stuff!!!

  12. Angela Bacon says:

I just had the chance use Arnica for my dog. He injured his back jumping off of the couch. He could barely walk down the stairs to go outside. I gave him Arnica 30 along with Rhus Tox later. Nothing much happened. I then gave the Arnica 200 and what a huge difference it made. Normally I would need to get him adjusted and/or acupuncture but after 1 day or so and some Ruta he has improved by 85%. This is a real miracle for him. I am always amazed when I use something in the 200 remedy. I love your video posts by the way. They are always so uplifting to me.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

      Potency matters.

    2. Angela Bacon says:

Just updating on my dog. Two days from his initial injury and today he is walking around like nothing happened.

      1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Excellent job, Angela. What a useful and noble life you’ve carved!

  13. Chari says:

Can Arnicare be used to treat the appearance of varicose veins, in addition to the Banerji protocol?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, PHom M says:

The Banerji Protocol for variscosities includes Arnica.
      One is plenty.

      1. Chari says:

Ok. Thank you for the response!
