Courtney’s son woke up with a large, crimson goose egg in the middle of his forehead. It looked like he’d been hit with a baseball right between the eyes!

“A mosquito was buzzing in my room last night – I guess it got me.”

The swelling was so red and angry- looking that her husband’s initial reaction was to hustle him off to the ER.

Courtney certainly knew that mosquitoes were more than just pesky little bloodsuckers; they can also carry parasites and viruses that spread some of the most debilitating diseases in the world.

And it was also the first time she had seen or heard of such an allergic reaction to a simple mosquito bite.

But Courtney had confidence in her homeopathic knowledge and confidence.

She was up for the task.

Some may be thinking the answer was Deet, right? Not so: joettecalabrese.com/blog/articles/3-homeopathic-remedies-for-pesticide-exposure/

Fortunately, Courtney knew to avoid toxic chemicals. She had her own essential oil repellent that not only smelled great but worked great, too.

Had she known about the vermin in her son’s room she might have used it before his insect incident.

The following is Courtney's home remedy (and what she could have done to prevent her son's allergic reaction):

1) Natural Repellent

Fill an 8 oz. spray bottle half-full of witch hazel or vodka.

Fill the rest of the bottle with water and then add the following oils:

  • 14 drops of Patchouli
  • 14 drops of Cedarwood
  • 8 drops of Geranium
  • 5 drops of Catnip

Apply a spritz to exposed skin and clothing when spending time outside. Reapply as needed.

2) Mosquito Magnets

Have you ever known someone who seems to be a mosquito magnet? These unlucky souls get bite after bite, while the person right next to them is left seemingly unscathed. You may also notice that the bites they experience tend to really swell up.

For those whose blood seems to be the perfect mosquito mojito, Staphysagria 6 or 30 (Apply the discount coupon code “Joette” at check-out for an additional 20% off!), taken a few times before going outside, can help quash the mosquitoes' interest, leaving them less likely to gorge. (Courtney now knows to consider this method for her son.)

*While the following protocol has been distilled for you, take careful note of the symptoms so you can choose the correct homeopathic remedy.*

If you do suffer from unfortunate insect bites, they can be treated with Ledum palustre or Apis mellifica.

Courtney considered Ledum palustre 200 because it has a history of addressing insect bites that carry diseases (as well as saliva that causes allergic reactions.)

Using Ledum 200C every few hours until symptoms are gone is the method she learned from my courses.

However, if the site has an edematous (excessive amount of fluid) swelling, is red and (especially), is hot to the touch, it's time to consider Apis mellifica 30C or 200C.

In Courtney’s son's case, he was a good candidate for Apis, so that’s what she used. After a few doses, the itching diminished, and the swelling reduced a bit.

These little changes for the better gave her comfort in knowing that she had chosen well, so she continued giving it to him every few hours. (Remember this approach. It will serve you well when trying to discern what to do next.)

By the next day, her son’s forehead looked near-to-normal, the bothersome itching was barely there, and she had avoided a superfluous trip to the ER.

I lived decades of my life with food intolerances, allergies, and chemical sensitivities until I was cured with homeopathy, so I understand pain, anxiety, and suffering. You may feel that your issues are more severe or different than anyone else’s, but I have seen it all in my practice and in my work in India. My opinion is that nothing has come close to the reproducible, safe and effective results that my clients, students and I have achieved with homeopathy.

Thanks Joette. A very timely post. As a self-proclaimed mosquito magnet this year more than ever, I have had success with Staphysagria 30. The only problem is if I forget to take it far enough in advance, I’m a mosquito’s dinner, and it doesn’t last until the next day.

    1. Marla says:

Joette and Judy, how far in advance do you take the Staphysagria? I have had more mosquito bites this year than in the last 8 to 10 years combined. It’s so bad that I am actually afraid to step foot in my garden (um, more like a weed patch this time of year) to pick my remaining green beans.

      1. About 30 minutes before is what I’ve heard…

  2. Liz says:

Thanks Joette! My children are “mosquito magnets” and go outside to play daily. So, if I give them one dose as soon as they are awake each morning and then again after breakfast, would those doses (1 hour apart) be too close together? How long after that second dose before they could go outside (and be ignored by the mosquitoes)? Would two doses *daily* for the 4 months or so of mosquito activity be too much? Thanks so much for all that you do! What a tremendous blessing!

  3. Liz says:

To clarify: One dose of Staphysagria 6 or 30 upon waking and then Staphysagria 6 or 30 again after breakfast. Would 2 *daily* doses of Staphysagria for 4+ months be too much? Will Staphysagria 6 or 30 eventually remove your “mosquito magnet” qualities permanently?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Yes, its too much. This info is not intended to be used daily for a chronic concern, but for a short term problem.

  4. Karen Bata says:

Thanks Joette for this. Lately we’ve seen an increase in mosquitoes here in our area. It seems someone in my family wakes up every morning with bites. I’ll be trying the Staphysagria 30 which is in the kit I bought from you. I’ll also be trying the essential oils combo. Karen

    1. We sleep under mosquito canopies. They are cheap on amazon and I attach a command strip hook to the ceiling which can be removed once mosquito season is over. 🙂

  5. Teniel says:

anything you can use instead of catnip. I have all the other oils

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

There are many essential oils that repel insects. I’d google it.

      1. Karen says:

I’ve seen Citronella, Peppermint and Thieves used before in homemade bug sprays, even Lemon. Hope this helps.

  6. Martha says:

Hi Teniel, If you have citronella oil or lemongrass mosquitoes really dislike the scent of both of these. Some people even grow citronella plants in their back yards to keep mosquitoes away.

  7. bethany says:

This article is perfect for this summer! It sounds like mosquitoes are really bad everywhere! I’ve always been a mosquito magnet so I’m trying everything you suggested.

  8. Lydia Grey says:

Does Staphysagria help if one is a magnet for other biting insects that cause itchy bites? I seem to be a magnet for chigger bites in the summer, and flea bites from my cats, so wondering if that would help.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Yes, for probably all biting insects.

  9. Sunna Dagmar Kraeger Cerasoli says:

Joette, I got bit heavely lately by mosqitos. Do you mean Staphisagria D or C Potencies. Here in Europe we go by these. Thank you for all your wounderful support. Sunna

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

You may use either of those two potencies.

  10. Good post. Very important points mentioned here. Mosquitoes are very dangerous and can take away life. The best way to prevent them is to keep the place clean and without stagnant water. Instead of repellents it is best to install window mosquito nets.

  11. Amritkar Mandal says:

No body has replied the result after taking Staphysagria 30. Please post your views.

  12. Mary Herman says:

Just want to say Staphysagria is great for anger! I speak from experience, just ask my husband. I was wondering if staphysagria would repel spiders. We’ve had a lot of house spiders this year and sometimes I wake up with a bite!

  13. Mandi says:

Can you also use Ledum 200 as a preventative for tick bites? My son will be working at a camp in the summer for 4 months in the middle of Lyme country. Can he take ledum as a preventative, once a week for 4 months? Or how would one use ledum for preventative against tick diseases?

    1. Tavolga says:

Sorry for the late response. I just saw your question. I live in the area infested with ticks. Ledum will not prevent the bites. Also it will not really do anything to help with Lyme disease in humans. But in dogs it will cure LD. I had experience with my husky. First she started limping. I thought it could be a hip problem. I decided to take her to vet.
$500 later doctor said that dog had lime disease. He prescribed antibiotics. They helped. Limping was gone. But while the dog was on antibiotic she developed meningitis. It was awful. She was laying with the neck stretched, screaming, not able to drink water… I was not sure if veterinarian would help her since she already was on antibiotic…. Internet helped me. I ordered Ledum 200C that was delivered on the same day. The next day my dog was cured!!!

  14. Karen Bata says:

I personally would only use Ledum when there are symptoms or bites. Using essential oils would be the preventative part.

  15. Bea Coleman says:

Joette will the Ledum and/or the Apis kill the viruses carried by mosquitoes such as West Nile Virus?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Not unlike how homeopathy acts for strep throat, MRSA or herpes, it doesn’t kill microorganisms the way an antibiotic would but puts the body in order so that the infection doesn’t take up residency.

  16. Bea Coleman says:

Does the Ledum and Apis prevent diseases by mosquitoes that in fact carry West Nile Virus or Eastern Equine Encephalitis?

  17. Mary says:

I’ve heard that mosquitoes are attracted to angry people….when I think of Staphysagria I think anger remedy! Interesting…

  18. Kara says:

Is this something I can give my daughter daily or weekly during mosquito season. Last evening she got a ton of bites while we were playing outside and the rest of us didn’t. She always gets the most bites. I have it in a 6c. I’ve tried making essential oil repellent in the past and she still gets bit and essential oils are expensive. Thanks!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Read the article carefully. The information you ‘re looking for is there.

      1. Kara says:

I’m still not sure after rereading the article. So when it says to take a few times before going outside, does that mean that before she goes outside, I give her a few doses like 10 minutes apart or 30 minutes? And on one comment a mom said she was giving her kids 2 doses in the morning before going outside all summer long and you said that is too much. It’s so hot here in Texas right now and the best time to play is in the evening when the mosquitos are out. I normally make her come inside when she starts getting bit but if I could give her this medicine than she could keep playing. Are you saying to only use this medicine occasionally and not constantly during misquito season? Thanks again!

        1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

It really depends on how long mosquito season lasts. If you’re talking about using it 2-3/Day spread out over the afternoon with the last one in the evening and for only a few weeks it would likely be more appropriate rather than many months.

  19. Sam Beard says:

I bought Staphysagria 30 but how many pills and how often? We have tiger mosquitos here too so get bitten all day from June to October. Sometimes May to October. It ruins outdoors for us.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

The number of pills that comprise a dose is printed on the side of the bottle.
Pls. re-read the article for how these medicines are used.

      1. AbbyT says:

This was my first homeopathic remedy I ever used. Out of desperation I was trying everything to help my toddler son’s severe mosquito allergy, (think extreme swelling-the entire arm 2x the size for one bite, and blisters, hot, painful). I think I tried everything to prevent and treat but nothing really worked except for the allergy medicine my doctor recommended, which I used out of complete desperation because nothing else worked! Even then I worried to death every time he went outside that he’d get bit on the face! I finally found this blog post and bought some Apis and we haven’t looked back! Severe mosquito bites are thing of the past. If he goes untreated they only swell a little if at all. Apis is reversing the allergy! Hallelujah! My question is, what can be done about the blisters? He will get 1-3 small (never bigger than pea sized) blisters on the bite location still. I think I’ve tried Ledum, which had no effect. It’s difficult to find information on blisters caused by bug bites — but maybe I’m looking for something too specific?

        1. Anne says:

I would say search for blisters remedies and read which one corresponds best to your son’s blisters

        2. Olena says:

Abby, what potency did you use? And how often? My daughter has been reacting to mosquito bites in a similar way.
          Thanks!

  20. Barb says:

I seem to have become a tick magnet. Any chance Staphysagria works for ticks like it does for mosquitoes and can make me less appealing to ticks?
