Homeopathy for Concussions

The two young boys had simply been watching too much wrestling on TV. The brothers loved to spend hours brawling down in their basement, reenacting the moves of their favorite professional wrestlers. But one evening, when 10-year-old Jason recreated Hulk Hogan’s signature move by slamming his little brother down onto his back against the floor, his brother went limp.

Out cold.

Terrified, Jason scooped his little brother up in his arms, holding back tears as he rushed him upstairs to his mother. He was sure he had killed him!

Of course, it was simply a concussion, and his brother came to within seconds after being presented to his mom.

Stunned and dazed, the tell-tale sign came later on in the evening when little brother complained of a throbbing headache.

This is what the boys’ mom did for her little warrior:

She began with Aconitum napellus 200 to deal with the shock of the incident.

Shortly after (about 15 minutes later), she offered Arnica montana 200C. This is a notable medicine for injuries to the head, as well as other areas of the body. (Receive a 20% discount at purchase by typing in the discount coupon “joette” in the shopping cart.)

(See how Arnica montana is made into medicine here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8KeNMha0F9g)

Now, with these two remedies underway, she began to observe his symptoms. Unfortunately, there was not as much improvement after the Aconite and Arnica as she had hoped, so she repeated Arnica once again after about 15 minutes.

Again, there was little to no improvement. So she started asking herself important questions about which remedies would be best given his symptoms.

She settled upon giving her little man Ledum palustre 30, as this can actually be a great medicine for a blow to the head, but it also appeared that he was developing a black eye, and Ledum is particularly great for this type of injury in particular. After a dose of this, there seemed to be a slight improvement. It’s not that we are looking to treat a black eye, but rather to use that symptom to determine what will help the entire injury.

At bedtime, her son began to complain of a headache. “My head feels like Boom. Boom. Boom. Boom,” which is indicative of a throbbing headache. That was a call for Belladonna 6, so into his mouth, she administered it.

Later in the evening, she dosed him again with the Arnica, Ledum, and Belladonna, separating each remedy from the other by about 15 minutes.

By then the throbbing headache was significantly reduced, and his eye was no longer black at all. Yes, that’s how quickly homeopathy can act in an acute setting!

Although it had been several hours since the incident, his parents wanted to keep a close watch over him, so they decided to have him sleep on a rollout mat next to their bed.

By morning, the little trooper woke up with a less intense headache. Mom continued administering the remedies she had previously selected throughout the prior day, each time with noticeable improvements. By observing this, she knew she was on the right track. By the end of the day, the throbbing headache was still somewhat present, so she gave an extra dose of the Belladonna to finish the job.

On the morning of the third day, all symptoms were pretty much gone, so she gave another dose of each remedy and sure enough, they went about their busy day without any further symptoms.

Great job, Mom!

I’m often asked why I use a different protocol for the same condition. My answer is that there’s more than one way to skin a cat.

As such, here’s the Banerji method for concussions:

Cuprum metallicum 6, administered more frequently shortly after the injury, and less frequently as improvement ensues. This medicine is essential for when the person feels dazed, dizzy is convulsing and even if there’s vision loss from a head injury.

I’d also like to note that I have seen this protocol to be of great benefit when someone is having or coming out of a seizure, such as a case with Gaylyn, whose son suffered from a fever seizure: https://joettecalabrese.com/podcast1/podcast-20-moms-with-moxie-a-new-miniseries/

Homeopathy is calling you … moms with moxie and rambunctious boys (and girls!) It’s medicine for your kind of life.

Now, if only homeopathy could fix the broken furniture!

Warmly,

I am a homeopath with a worldwide practice working with families and individuals via Zoom. I'm also a teacher and most importantly, a mom who raised my now-adult children depending on homeopathy over the last 31 years. I lived decades of my life with food intolerances, allergies, and chemical sensitivities until I was cured with homeopathy, so I understand pain, anxiety, and suffering. You may feel that your issues are more severe or different than anyone else’s, but I have seen it all in my practice and in my work in India. My opinion is that nothing has come close to the reproducible, safe and effective results that my clients, students and I have achieved with homeopathy.

hello Joette! Wow what great ideas for head injuries. Taking care of an unsteady elder is a lot like taking care of a toddler sometimes; she bumps her head pretty often and my go to is always Arnica/Hamamelis due to the tendency to small brain bleeds, but I think I use Ledum for insect bites more than anything else and I really appreciate the expanded view.

Hi Cheli! You’ve got your work cut out for you. Good job.

  2. Jackie says:

Would these remedies work for headaches and dizziness issues due to a concussion 3 months ago? At what frequency?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

The perfect use of Cupurm met 6, 2D is when there is a long lasting condition after a concussion.

      1. Ellen L says:

Joette this info is very helpful to me, as I have some similar lingering effects from concussion as well. Is the remedy Cuprum metallicum 6C OR 6X? The link brings one to Boiron 30C in the photo. I see now checking back that there are two choices of 30C or 6C, so “C” would be the correct potency? Thank you very much for your article.

        1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

6 is the potency and since I don’t have control of what’s available in your neck of the woods, I generally don’t include x or c. x would be my preference, but c will do.

      2. Jackie says:

        Thank you!

          You’re welcome.

  3. Kathleen says:

Hi Joette. This may be a silly question, but my sister has migraine headaches rather frequently and the (conventional) doctors seem to think the reason is because of a fall she had (with a blow to the head, knocked unconscious) on a cement floor many years ago. Do you think that perhaps the Cuprum 6 might help with her migraines?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Not at all silly. Old injuries that carry on with present day symptoms are a call for the homeopathic that would have corresponded at the time. PLUS Cuprum met 6 is an excellent medicine for headaches without a discernible etiology.

  4. Carolyn says:

Dear Joette, I thank you for all your help with homeopathy and find it so valuable for my family. Arnica is a wonderful remedy for stopping bleeding but is it true that Arnica should not be taken just before and after a person is operated on. I knew a friend who had been given Arnica before an operation to enable her to recover more quickly after her op. She had to be taken back to the theatre to stop her bleeding. The doctors blamed the Arnica. Is this true and must one be wary under those circumstances?

    1. joette calabrese says:

Never use the advise of an allopathic doctor in regards to homeopathy. They have less than any understanding of it. Indeed Arnica montana can cause bleeding if given in the gross form. That is if one were to eat the flowers but homeopathy is based on a unique pharmacological method that makes what causes a condition in the gross form, cure it in the potentized, homeopathic form. So instead, Arnica montana 200 would actually aid in the bleeding, shock and potential infection of surgery. Its the perfect medicine for that. Id be more suspicious about one of their medicines causing your friend’s problem. Daily aspirin, for example can do this. The moment you tell an allopath that you’re using homeopathy, they blame everything on it, rarely considering their drugs as the cause.

  5. Kelly says:

Would 6 be the correct potency of Cuprum Met at the time of the injury as well? Or just for lingering issues weeks and months down the road?

    1. Kelly says:

So I see I either missed the 6 the last time I read the post or it has been updated. Thank you!

  6. I have chronic brain injury issues from 8+ concussions since I was 12, I am 45 now, and my most recent concussion was 15+ years ago. I’ve seen various recomendations in your materials for Arnica, Nat-sulph, Hypericum, Hellaborus, Cali-sulph, etc. What protocol should I follow, and how do I know when to go to higher potencies like 1M and above, as recommended for Nat-sulph? Thank you for your help!

    1. joette calabrese says:

I’m sorry, but I don’t take cases on this forum. If you would like to work with me directly, you may contact my office.

      1. Thanks, Courtney. We have called and were told to ask on an appropriate blog post, so going in circles. How do you suggest we proceed please?

      2. Could you please help me understand what makes my question a case vs. others?

        1. Jaime says:

Deacon Patrick, I am interested to find out what you learned. I find it absolutely fascinating that someone could be cured of ongoing brain injury issues by taking the remedy that would have been called for at the time of the original injury–even many years-old injuries such as what you refer to!

          1. We shifted direction, Jaime, and have been focusing on cell salts almost exclusively. We found this book very helpful: https://www.amazon.com/Homeopathic-Cell-Salt-Remedies-Compounds/dp/0757002501/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1487609955&sr=8-5&keywords=cell+salts

Less than a month in and seeing some very tangible results. May God startle you with joy!

    2. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I can’t tell you what you should take unless I take your case. Each medicine has specific abilities and is associated with specific symptoms. Without learning your symptoms, it would be a pot shot as to which medicine would be correct for you, so I’d have to ask you many specific questions. That is not what this forum is a platform for.
Get to a materia medica on line or purchase one and read each of the medicines I’ve discussed. That’s how you’ll know which is best suited to this specific condition.

      1. Ina says:

        Dear Joette
I would like to purchase that book. When i google: materia media so many books come up. is there one specific you recommend. I love all your insights…do you have a book?
        Greetings

        1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I have a materia medica that you may purchase on my site. Here’s the link https://joettecalabrese.com/products/

  7. Tera Woods says:

If a toddler has had extreme constipation since a concussion (dizziness and lack of coordination being the main symptoms at the time of the injury- never been well since), would cuprum met be a good fit? Our Craniosacral therapist thinks a brain injury is the root of his constipation. Thank you Joette!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Cuprum met is a good choice after a head injury, but I can’t say whether its the right fit for your toddler. Anytime you’re not sure about a specific remedy, look it up in a materia medica on line and read the indications.

  8. Emily says:

Great info. What would you suggest for a 7 year old that had two concussions (two months apart) a year and a half ago? There is still a small bump on his forehead and ongoing headaches and focus issues.

  9. Emily says:

I know you can’t give specific advice on this forum but really what I’m seeking is if the same remedy would be used for a concussion that occurred a while back as one that just occurred. Taking your gateway to homeopathy study group lessons now. So much to learn!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

There a few remedies that may be used for a concussion depending on how the condition presented. If convulsions fallowed, Cuprum met., for example might be advised, while if headaches fallowed, Arnica might best be chosen. When I write these blogs, I try to distill the information to the simplest and teach the most commonly used medicine.
Yes, there’s lots to learn and that’s the best part because it becomes a flame that never extinguishes.

  10. MJ Singh says:

how abt MILLE FOLIUM in bleeding cases

  11. Chantelle says:

My son was hit in the head with a baseball 2 weeks ago. He just now started having headaches. Would you suggest Arnica or Cuprum? If Cuprum, how often would you recommend giving?

    Thanks,
    Chantelle

  12. ina says:

joette is there any post you’ve done on brain bleedings/ brain haemorrhage? Ive googled and could find this one. i am reading everything i can find from you…so amazing…thank you thank you thank you

  13. Ann says:

    Hi Joette,

Would this work for a child who hit her nose to the point of bleeding, with light swelling later on and mild pain (no bruising) and headache later on?
Also, don’t have Belladonna 6 on hand, but do have the 15 and 30.Which one would be more appropriate?
    Thank you.
