Is your hound Baskerville-ish? You know, red eyes, threatening small towns with his menacing canine stench, growling at the UPS guy?Buster the Office Dog

Meet Buster, The Bad Office Dog. He’s my dog, and he stays with the staff and me all day in our office. Sometimes he’s good, but sometimes he lives up to his moniker.

Every August he becomes more menacing than usual. Needy, whiny, his eyes inflamed, droopy and watery, especially after a bowl of raw milk, which is part of his diet all year. This is when he goes into a scratching frenzy, and he takes on an odor that is instantly noticeable on walking past him. Whoa, Buster, that’s awful!

And each year I treat him with Sulphur 200C, one dose every other day for about a week, then repeat it two weeks later. It always clears up his odor and behavior within the second week of treatment, and then he’s a more acceptable member of the office team. His eyes and skin clear up as well.

This year I tried something different. I gave him his usual Sulphur 200C in the same fashion but added Bovista 200C twice daily for allergies, as we know that’s what’s making him houndish.

But just as he was beginning to improve, he cornered a skunk in the garden, and it brought him to his knees. Not only did he spend a lot of time being scrubbed down with soap inadvertently getting in his eyes, but it also seemed to put behind our efforts to tone down his behavior, allergies and smelliness.

Tomato juice, vinegar, baking soda plus simple soaps became his lifestyle for about a week until he became office-acceptable.

Once the skunk affair was completely out of his fur and the office, I reinstated his Sulphur 200C and Bovista 200C regimen, and he responded fully.

As I write this, it has been approximately 12 weeks, and he’s become better behaved, his itching is gone, his eyes are back to their usual sparkle and his odor has melted away.

Remember these remedies for your hound.

Then pass the info on to your friends and neighbors. Let’s keep homeopathy alive and friends informed.

It’s a win-win. Or rather, a bow-wow.

“If you have allergies, remember that modern medicine has written you off. The CDC itself will tell you: “There is no cure for allergies. Strict avoidance of the allergen is the only way to prevent a reaction.” I lived decades living in a bubble, dealing with my allergies. Things improved when I stopped taking prescription drugs and changed my diet, but I was not cured. So, I kept searching until I found the thing that changed my life forever: homeopathy. Want to learn the same homeopathic steps I took to clear myself of allergies? Learn them today and use them tonight with my newest course: Allergic: http://allergies.joettecalabrese.com/allergic/ and download a free infographic and start learning what remedies could help uproot your allergies.”

I am a homeopath with a worldwide practice working with families and individuals via Zoom. I'm also a teacher and most importantly, a mom who raised my now-adult children depending on homeopathy over the last 31 years. I lived decades of my life with food intolerances, allergies, and chemical sensitivities until I was cured with homeopathy, so I understand pain, anxiety, and suffering. You may feel that your issues are more severe or different than anyone else’s, but I have seen it all in my practice and in my work in India. My opinion is that nothing has come close to the reproducible, safe and effective results that my clients, students and I have achieved with homeopathy.

Call today and learn how homeopathy might just be the missing piece in your health strategy.

I wish cats were as easy to figure out as dogs…

    1. Claire says:

Me too! We’ve always used homeopathy as a family and my parents have taken in and treated stray and feral cats with homeopathy for some 25 + years now. I personally have had five cats of my own and I will say that along with homeopathy, one of the absolute best tools you can have in your feline medicine box is Colloidal Silver: I successfully treated a truly enormous mammary abscess (the contents of which was approx 500ml of suppuration, shocking to see when it gave way) with a combination of Hepar Sulp and Silica, to mop up. Once empty, Salt water and a colloidal silver rinse to clean out the empty sac prevented further bacterial invasion, which is always nightmarish when treating cats. I’ve used it since for numerous small ‘cat battle’ inflicted abscesses with 100% success.

Happy to hear you’ve got it down to a science.

Great tip to know! Will this help clear an ear infection. My dogs ears are smelly and filled wih yellow puss. He is constantly shaking his head. I since put him on a raw meat, egg diet with some flax oil. but It’s a slow go. I haven’t gone to the vet because it’s antibiotics, which messes alot of other things up with him.

  3. Sherri says:

What a timely post! I’ve been giving one of my dogs Sulphur 200c as well, for stinky body odor, laziness (lays down while eating), doesn’t want to play, and jealousy around other dogs. A couple of days later after a dose he improves tremendously! Becomes a totally different dog! Then after about a month, he reverts back in behavior. I had been wondering what type of dosing schedule I should do…after all, animals can’t quite tell us when they need another dose and I certainly didn’t want to dose him too frequently. Since I see improvement after just one dose, would you recommend shortening my time from one month to every 2 weeks? Or try your dosing schedule? As always, thank you for your incredible insight and willingness to teach us!

    1. Even though i see improvement within a day or so of administering a remedy such as this, i continue, say twice daily for an entire week, then one week on and one week off and so on for about a month. this works every time for Buster and our previous dog.

      1. Sherri says:

I dosed as you suggested, 2D for 1 week. 4 days after, my dog developed pleurisy (vet confirmed). I know Sulphur treats pleurisy…is this an aggrevation, or a sign of healing? This dog has never had pleurisy before, but has exhibited signs of asthma.

    2. Kingston says:

Use Zymox in his ears. Works wonders. My holistic vet told me about this.

  4. Cynthia says:

My dog will not take any homeopathy readily, unless it’s in food. I understand that can antidote the remedy, however, our holistic vet says that it will still work. How do you dose Buster?

  5. ra thompson says:

I don’t own any pets, but a friend who owns several dogs says the best thing to get skunk off a dog is the old Massengill douche that has been around for many years?..works quickly and completely?…I have no idea??…but thought I would pass that along…she had tried everything through the years and says this is the best(and least expensive) remedy she has tried..be interesting to know if it works for others? God Bless and Merry CHRISTmas! and a great New Year!

  6. Angie says:

How do you dose it to your dog? It looks like people are supposed to hold under their tongue till it dissolves. Do you just dissolve in some liquid first and have the dog drink it? I have a 20lb Lhasa Apso who I think would benefit from this also.

    Thanks for this post!

  7. Susan Jacoby says:

Do you put pillules under the dog’s tongue?
    Mixed in the food?
    Or in liquid form?

With dogs and cats, have had good success with Bach remedies
    in the water bowl.

    Please advise.
    Thanks and Regards,
    Susan

our cat got it in the face from a skunk so bad I wondered if I should take her to the vet but chose to use organic lavender oil diluted 65 drops distilled water to 1 drop oil which I keep on hand for her to keep ticks & fleas away from her. I wore gloves & just kept rubbing it into her fur & in about 20 min. most of the odor was gone from her. since it had gotten her in the face too I carefully wiped it with a wet cloth & the diluted oil but not too much.

  9. Sabina says:

I’ve only had to deskunk once, but baking soda and hydrogen peroxide worked great, I added a little rose dr. bronner’s and our pup was house worthy in 2 washings and all was well within 3 washings.

Thank you immensely for the allergy tips. Fall and Spring bring on the red eyes.

    1. Many thanks for sending this info along. we must keep homeopathy alive.

  11. Donna says:

That was a great story Joette! I remember back when you recommended Sulphur for our dog Katie and she responded almost immediately. You may recall that after being on antibiotics for a “bladder infection” for several weeks, as per her vet, we saw absolutely no improvement and Katie continued to pee on our carpet. I am sure she was miserable as well. We knew it was not her fault but it was certainly a chore to clean everyday. The Sulphur solved the problem, Katie was completely better, and antibiotics were tossed in the trash, renewing my interest and confirming my faith in homeopathy.

  12. barb says:

unrelated question…if someone is taking warfarin and falls, has an oopsy, can he take arnica…also…..my nephew has gone gluten free..but he’s also allergic to beans and all nuts except peanuts. your cake used white beans-is there a way to make a cake with something else?

  13. MaryF says:

Thank you for this very useful post! Also, I love your commitment, “We must keep homeopathy alive.”

I’m getting the Sulphur out right now.

  14. Liz says:

I love your stories! I don’t have any pets, but I know some humans who sometimes act like this! 😉

  15. SBrooks says:

My cat licks all the hair off the back half of her body every year at the same time. So last fall I gave her the Bach flower essence “crab apple” and after a week she stopped. It has not happened again. I had the flower essence at home, but my next try would be homeopathy. Do flower essences and homoeopathy work on the same things or at the same level?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Back flower remedies are useful but homeopathy goes beyond them to a very large degree. Homeopathy in the hands of experts has been shown to cure cancer, kidney failure, autism, fibroids, etc. It is medicine at its best.
In my opinion they are not on the same level; homeopathy is far superior. Having said this however, I use Bach flower remedies from time to time since I have a large stock of them from years ago, but only when I haven’t taken the time to discover the correct homeopathic.

  16. Hannah says:

    Hi Joette,

Do you have any suggestions for a dog that’s a submissive urinator? Our female poodle/Australian shepherd pees when she’s excited or nervous and insecure. lately we don’t even have to talk to her she just walk up to us and squat and pee on the carpet! My kids don’t wet the bed but last night my husband walked into the kids bedroom when they were sleeping and our dog was on my son’s bed (which IS allowed) and SHE peed on his bed! It’s so frustrating and I would give her away if it weren’t for our 3 kids who love her dearly. We have carpet everywhere in our home and it’s a problem!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Without taking the case, it’s hard to know but you might read about one of the best remedies for anxiety and nervousness. When it’s the base cause, this will often help. Check out the blog titled “A Salute to Ignatia….”
Please pass that particular article around to friends so that it can help many.

  17. barb says:

dear joette I found out my dog has spring and fall allergy the vet want me to use Benadryl im not sure if this will help them they scratch all the time until they are raw thanks for all you do

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

The choices you’ve made are good ones. It may take longer to see resolution.

  19. barb says:

thank you joette for giving me help as always!!!

  20. meredith says:

Hi Joette! Would this be a good remedy for our bulldog who gets red eyes & a ton of thick sticky green mucus? This has just started happening over the last year or so (she’s 9 yrs old) & the vet put her on an eye cream optimmune. She also has a stinky odor & is prone to chronic uti’s.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I don’t consider this necessarily useful for UTI’s but certainly for allergies and odors.

  21. meredith says:

Great thanks! What do you recommend for uti’s for dogs?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

The same as for humans. Here’s an article I published on the Healthy Home Economist that will help.http://www.thehealthyhomeeconomist.com/home-remedies-for-a-uti/

  22. meredith says:

    Thanks! Will try these 🙂

  23. Susanna Laslett says:

Hi Joette. I have a small rescue cat with irritable bowel and the standard vet recommends prednisolone at 5mg a day. I have tried to wean him off numerous times with no long term success. I feed all my animals a home made balanced diet but this cat would not eat so he is given canned food. He has just started embracing the raw food recipe and I was wondering if there is any homeopathic products that might help heal his bowel while I transition him to the raw diet and wean him off the pred. I know you aren’t a vet but you do know about guts. Thanks in advance.

  24. Nikki Christie says:

What would you suggest for tear stains in 4 month old pup? Thank you 🙂

  25. Nikki Christie says:

What would you suggest for tear stains in a 4 month old puppy?
    Thank you 🙂

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

      I don’t have a suggestion for that.

  26. Sarah Burks says:

Is this the correct remedy for stinky
    breath in a dog?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

It’s not the same problem. Breath odor can be associated with throat, dental or GI conditions.

  27. jane knetzer says:

    Hi Joette!

I love all your articles, they are soooo helpful.

I’m struggling with what you mean when you say “And each year I treat him with Sulphur 200C, one dose every other day for about a week, then repeat it two weeks later. This year I tried something different. I gave him his usual Sulphur 200C in the same fashion but added Bovista 200C twice daily for allergies, as we know that’s what’s making him houndish.”

I purchased the Sulphur and the Bovista for my own dog with the same issues. However, I don’t know how much to give?

When you say one dose every other day for about a week; does this mean just one tiny pellet of the sulphur?

Any clarification on this would be so helpful for me.

    Thank you so much!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

The number of pills that comprise a dose is printed on the side of the bottle.

  28. ina says:

I just want to reply that my 13 year old service dog has the last year gotten this horrible smell and bad breath. I tried brushing her teeth and giving her liver cleanse etc etc. and then I read this. One week of Sulphur 200C and her smells is gone…I AM SO HAPPY because it made me sad how people just was getting repulsive of her…amazing…this homoapatic stuff is just making me so happy.
Joette you’re doing a lot of good!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I know. I know. Is this medicine not divine?

  29. Janice Burlet says:

Do you have suggestions for smelly sweat in people also? I have tried pyrogenium and works for awhile then odor is back and drives me nutso. What can cause bad odors anyway?
    Thanks for all you do….

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Dog. Cat. Squirrel. Cow. Human. If the condition is the same and there’s nothing specific that needs to be addressed such as an infection, etc., the medicine is the same.
Pyrogenium is specific for infections such as sepsis. I can’t urge enough to study your materia medica before making a choice. Otherwise, you’ll be shooting in the dark.

  30. Debbie Reeves says:

Using both sulphur 200 and bovista 200 for our puppy. We are in the midst of the two week break in the sulphur regimen and the stink seems to be getting less. Win!

The bovista got started a a few days later than the sulphur and he is still so itchy and has now developed diarrhea and has runny eyes again (they had cleared up). Is this just a normal part of the ebb and flow of homeopathic healing? How do I know when to stop the remedy? He had had flaky dry skin and red raw skin underneath.

  31. Debbie says:

We came back from our 2 week vacation to our dog having skin issues. Our friends that were keeping him described them as “hot spots” so I had them put him on a homeopathic remedy called hot spot (which includes both sulphur 6 and 30)

Within a few days the oozing sores started scabbing up. The scabs have now fallen off. The skin underneath is pink, but it has lots of red spots on it.

Should I continue to treat him with the remedy since there is improvement even though the spots are still there, he still smells yeasty (although less so) and still sometimes licks at his paws and legs?

    Thank you,
    Debbie

  32. Raven Kasprzak says:

Ok I think I have a good idea to start with for my old sweet dog. He has been scratching his ears and dragging his behind for years and everything I have done and the vet has not stopped it. So I am going to give him the sulpher 200 one dose every other day for about a week and then repeat it two weeks later. Then if after that month he still needs help I will add the Bavista 200c twice daily for allergies. thanks

  33. Heather Rowan says:

You know dairy is not good for dogs??? Why would you give him milk? It’s not even good for cats, despite all of the false info

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, PHom M says:

Raw milk vs. ultra pasturized are 2 different foods.
