joint, muscle, back pain

If you never experience pain in your back, joints and bone don’t read this.

But if you do, consider it a valuable tool in finding the homeopathic that will uproot the main cause, as well as the pain itself.

Whether from an accident, overexertion from work, play or even rehab, each of us knows all too well the physical and emotional stress of joint, muscle or back pain.

What sets us apart is how the pain presents. Learn how to determine this, and the homeopathic medicine that’s indicated will become easy to choose. You’ll find this below.

Over three decades ago, I chose to treat my family with homeopathy rather than turn to addicting and dangerous prescription medications.

Homeopathy provides a gentle approach to reducing or eliminating pain — whether from mild injuries or conditions or from those that require medical attention.

The best part is that homeopathy does more than just reduce pain; it moves the condition forward at a speed that is often unexpected, while also protecting against degeneration.

This means that it sets the body to work so that the condition lasts for a shorter period of time and the suffering is less intense, thereby calming the overall state of being; even better, this is all accomplished with natural medicines that are not synthetic or patented.

You may use more than one medicine.  Indeed, if two are clearly indicated, then alternate between those two. That is, you might choose Arnica 200 to be taken at noon and Rhus tox 30 at 1 PM, then return to Arnica 200 at 3 PM and Rhus tox 30 at 4 PM until there is identifiable improvement.

Once improvement is established, open up the amount of time by a few hours. We’re always looking for that sweet spot in time where the homeopathic can do its most efficient work. To learn more go to my Podcast 12.

Arnica montana 6, 30 or 200

So, you went to the gym and overdid it. Or perhaps you were just walking along, minding your own business, and the sidewalk jumped up and tripped you! (At least that’s your story, and you’re sticking to it.)

Arnica montana (mountain daisy or leopard’s bane) is my go-to remedy to relieve the joint and muscle pain that is sure to follow overexertion or falls. It’s also a beautiful medicine to use as part of recovery from surgery. An added benefit is that Arnica also reduces bruising, which comes in handy for the klutzy amongst us.

Bryonia 6, 30 or 200

Joint pain is especially … well … painful, as even the tiniest movement of the joint can cause excruciating pain! Sometimes, the only relief comes from being completely immobile. Unfortunately, remaining completely still over the course of the day is all but impossible in the real world. Bryonia (white bryony or wild hops) is specifically helpful for this type of pain. Also, if your pain feels improved by applying pressure to the area, that’s a good clue that Bryonia can help.

Hypericum perforatum 30 or 200

Injuries to the back are so common and taking prescription drugs to treat this pain has reached epic proportions. Lower back pain with shooting pains running down the nerves’ paths can be especially difficult to treat. For all nerve-related pain, choose Hypericum (St. John's wort). It not only works for this type of back pain, but also pain resulting from aggravated nerves. Think of it when you have dental work or a puncture wound where nerves may be affected, or especially any injury to the nerve-rich areas of your fingertips. Consider Hypericum as “the Arnica of the nerves.”

Rhus toxicodendron 6, 30 or 200

For those times when your joints are debilitating, stiff, and painful when you’ve been resting for a while, don’t rely solely on making grunting noises like your grandpa did as he got moving after too much gardening. Instead, reach in your kit for your Rhus tox (poison ivy). It’s also brilliant to have on hand if you are in physical therapy … when joint pain is intense at the beginning of the session but lessens as the joints “warm up.”

Symphytum officinale 6, 30 or 200

Bone injuries can certainly be extremely painful as well.  Symphytum officinale is for any bone injury, bone bruise or even skull trauma. It not only relieves the pain but also assists in healing after a break or fracture has been reset. It's a sterling choice for arthritis and achy joints and is a great accompaniment in 200 to Rhus tox 30 for not only arthritis but pains of muscles and tendons.

Join me in learning how to deal with pain of the joints, muscles, bones and back by choosing homeopathic remedies rather than addicting drugs. These gentle, scientifically studied medicines can help you minimize pain without risks.

I’ve posted a short YouTube video of me explaining this information. I hope it helps you decide which remedy would best suit you and/or your family. I invite you to check out the video (and all the other helpful videos on my YouTube channel) here:

joint, muscle, back pain

I am a homeopath with a worldwide practice working with families and individuals via Zoom. I'm also a teacher and most importantly, a mom who raised my now-adult children depending on homeopathy over the last 31 years. I lived decades of my life with food intolerances, allergies, and chemical sensitivities until I was cured with homeopathy, so I understand pain, anxiety, and suffering. You may feel that your issues are more severe or different than anyone else’s, but I have seen it all in my practice and in my work in India. My opinion is that nothing has come close to the reproducible, safe and effective results that my clients, students and I have achieved with homeopathy.

Call today and learn how homeopathy might just be the missing piece in your health strategy.

  1. Lyn says:

I just am coming out of the worst episode of back pain I’ve ever had, lasted over a week. After 3 days of no sleep and not being able to move without pain I succumbed to Motrin for pain and inflammation with enough relief to be able to get out of bed. I did try Arnica 200 but it didn’t move it enough for me to get out of bed more than 30 minutes. I am so glad I saw this article so I can be prepared for next time, since all I did was bury the problem deeper. My question is what relieves the inflammation?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

The medicines I discussed in the article remove inflammation. That’s how they work.

  2. Jeanene Tremoulet says:

Have bone broth daily, eliminating grains, including fermented foods and organ meats has taken my aches and pains away. I had foot pain for about 20 years, and pain after work out. I have pinned your homeopathic remedies so can use them to, Thank you!

  3. Lee Ellen Seeba says:

Hi Joette, Every time I’ve tried a homeopathic med in the past, I haven’t noticed them doing anything at all but I also don’t like the idea of taking prescription meds all the time either since I know they have long term effects that are not good. I’ve got a lot of tendonitis in my body. I currently take 15mg of Meloxicam every day & as long as I do, I almost feel normal but after not taking it for about 3 days, everything hurts! I have inflammation in my foot, both knee patella tendons, several spots in my back, both shoulders & my neck despite the fact that I try to eat foods that are anti-inflammatory. I’ve tried taking a strong circuit that’s supposed to be easily absorbed as well & it seemed to do nothing for me along with being really expensive. I keep trying different things to see if anythung will help but so far nothing except the Meloxicam does. I watched your video but you talked about so many different things I’m confused as to what might be best to try.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

When homeopathics don’t act, its usually because the wrong one is being used or its not being taken long enough. You might want to meet with an expert on homeopathy or consider taking a course. It is a vast and complex subject. After all, you saw an expert in conventional medicine for the condition.

  4. Eileen says:

I was wondering if these remedies are useful for knee or hip replacements, during ones healing time, or is the surgery protocol the one to follow? Can knee and hip replacements be avoided with these remedies when the damage has become so debilitating?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

They are wonderful after surgery and ought to be used before committing to surgery. Often surgery can be avoided.

  5. Stephanie says:

What about feelings of tightness or constriction in the back that’s not necessarily painful, but definitely uncomfortable, sometimes to the point of making sleep difficult, like a “knot” in the back.

    1. Stephanie says:

Any ideas? I could use something today.

  6. Luciana says:

Dear Joette, first of all thank you very much for the great job you do. I’d like to know how to chose the correct potency of the remedy. In this post you recommend two or even three different potencies for each remedy, so, how to tell which one is necessary?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I tend to start high, but if you have the lower potency, low will often do the trick as well.

      1. Princy Balaji says:

Thank you so much for helping me out. I have tried allopathy which gives drowsiness and other side effects and then having ayurveda medicines since a year…but no relief. I have taken xray and blood test. Its just degeneration of bones and early arthritic symptoms.

  7. Amy E says:

Perfect timing for my family this week! One kiddo has a sore thumb joint from volleyball, the other tight arm muscles from tennis and my hubby did a race through the wilderness this weekend making him sore all over. They have all had the Arnica and it is helping. The Byronia for joints was new to me so I will be trying that for the thumb!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

      ‘Sounds like a plan.

      1. Amy E says:

The Byronia worked so well for the injured thumb joint! Thank you!

  8. I’ve been using homeopathics for almost 40 years on my children, myself and now my grandchildren. They never let me down. I used them on my horse in the past also and they were awesome! Now I have an epileptic Dalmatian and they don’t work on him. I’ve tried everything and been to two homeopaths and they cannot help either.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Homeopathy has a history of being able to happily treat epilepsy. Think in terms of what may have preceded it, such as vaccinations or pesticides poisoning. That might give you a clue.

  9. Sidra says:

    Hello Joette!
I have been diagnosed with Bile Reflux, which i learned is different from Acid Reflux. I was wondering if you have any articles which will help me to understand this condition. I would like to seek your consultation, kindly guide me about it as well.
    Thank you
    Sidra

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

The name is often not as important as how the condition presents. That means that the symptoms are important, but given that it is a liver condition, the medicine must be liver specific. Its not possible for me to take your case here and I don’t believe I’ve written on liver conditions, however, if you’re interested in learning more on the subject, you might find it useful to check out my course Good Gut Bad Gut. I don’t specifically cover the condition by name but it certainly covers the overall problem.

  10. Amy G. says:

    Hi Joette –

I believe that you have previously said that the TMJ protocol is the same as the arthritis protocol, so rhus tox 30 mixed with symphytum officinale 200, correct? Thank you!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

      You bet.

      1. Amy G. says:

Thanks so much! As far as I can tell, these remedies worked for my husband’s TMJ, though he will not readily admit nor acknowledge such. After several more homeopathic successes, he will. Ha.

        1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

The key to bringing a husband around is to simply give it to him with not a whisper of fanfare or expectation.

          1. Amy G. says:

            Good advice!

        2. Judy L. says:

Is the Rhus tox indicated for TMJ that is worse for movement (chewing) and better for rest first thing in the morning?

          1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

It sounds pretty close to the keynotes to Rhus tox. But to be certain, read about RT in your materia medica.

      2. Mary says:

Is the arthritis link available to find the frequency of this protocol? Thanks!

      3. Shelley says:

Could this help constant lower back pain as well?

        1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, PHom M says:

Certainly possible but there are many others to consider.
If you’re not in one of my Gateway to Study Groups, get in. (JoettesLearningCenter) That’s where you’ll learn how to find the answers to such important questions. If you’re already in, then go to JoettesLearningCenter (again) scroll down to the course I teach called “Pain: Make it Stop”. There are so many protocols for specific painful conditions
It will make you happy and satisfied that you know the answers not only for yourself but your family, friends, etc.

  11. Gay H. says:

Hi Joette, What are your thoughts on topical use of arnica gel? If it is used should one wait 15 minutes before or after taking any other remedy, just like if the arnica was taken orally? Thank you for all of your insights!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I don’t worry about timing when it comes to topical ointments and gels.

  12. pythonesk99 says:

Both of my knees are bone on bone and I’m looking at knee replacements. I’ve tried gelatin, collagen, synvisc injections, glucosamine chondroitin, boswellia & msm. The only thing that really helps is Aleve but that messes up my bowels in a truly horrendous way. Does homeopathy have a fix for opioid induced constipation? Thanks!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I would have thought you were going to ask me whether homeopathy aids in conditions such as your knees! Why not use homeopathy instead of something that causes a new disease?

      1. Laurel says:

Because when your problem gets so severe that Homeopathy doesn’t help you have to turn to other means. I guess nothing’s going to bring back the cartilage, ha!
        Pythonesk@yahoo.com

        1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I couldn’t disagree with you more. “Bone on bone” does not mean that’s the end of the line.

          1. Judy says:

I couldn’t agree more with you Joette. And if opioids are the cause of constipation, it would make sense to try something that will enable a person to stop taking the opioids.

          2. Princy Balaji says:

Thank you so much for helping me out. I have tried allopathy which gives drowsiness and other side effects and then having ayurveda medicines since a year…but no relief. I have taken xray and blood test. Its just degeneration of bones and early arthritic symptoms.

  13. Both my knees are bone on bone, feels like forever. What exactly would help? I definitely do NOT want knee replacements!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

In writing the article, I didn’t write anything about how these medicines are useful for everyone EXCEPT those who have bone on bone. Homeopathy may amaze you. Find what fits and give it a go.

  14. Mary says:

I’ve been listening to Dr Tom O’Bryan on YouTube talk about healing Leaky Gut in connection with autoimmune disorders. I have rheumatoid arthritis and Hashimotos, both auto immune disorders, depression also but figure it is a result of the other disorders. I have changed my diet a lot, and have less pain (I don’t take any RA meds and rarely take Tylenol, wondering where to begin on choosing the correct homeopathic remedy to help leaky gut heal, and/or tackle my autoimmune disorders. Any suggestions?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Homeopathy is a vast medical system and although I try to make it as simple as possible, it remains that it requires either the aid of a homeopath or learning how to use the medicines with a course when it comes to RA and other chronic conditions. Should you be interested, I offer a course that covers, step by step how to proceed with regards to chronic conditions titled, Good Gut, Bad Gut. You may access it from my site.

  15. Nell says:

Hello, I’m wondering if I use hyper 200 mix w symphytum 200 (bp) 2x day for chronic back pain can I use Bryonia for when the back pain is so acute it hurts to move a muscle or would I use hypericum 30 on top of using the protocol?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I often use more than one medicine at a time for differnt aspects of the same condition as well as for wholly different conditions. The way you’ve thought this through is well done. I like to stick to using Hypericum in the 200 and save Bryonia for “worse from movement”.

  16. debbie says:

My son suffered a really bad injury three months ago and he had and mri done. He was told he has a frozen shoulder and a very large ganglion cyst there as well on the left shoulder. Its effecting his entire arm including the elbow and hand. Can you please provide a protocol for both conditions.
    Thanks
    Debbie

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I don’t provide protocols on request. Instead, I write about conditions on this blog, so that there is a background with potency, frequency, and examples. Use the search bar and try a few blogs.

  17. debbie says:

All I did was ask a simple question trying to help my son with his shoulder. Why such a rude response?
Don’t take out what’s bothering you on me.
    GOOD BYE
    DEBBIE
PS I’ve looked on your site for frozen shoulder and ganglion cyst and didn’t find any thing.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

You found my response rude? Really?

Frozen shoulder is a form of arthritis. Look up arthritis.

      1. debbie says:

I know frozen shoulder is a form of arthritis. so there If you cant stand somebody saying something you disagree with maybe you should do something else. People get criticize all the time even you from time to time. its not the end of the world.
        THANKS
        DEBBIE

        1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

          What?

      2. Lori Abrams says:

She says: Frozen shoulder is a form of arthritis. THANK YOU!!!! hehehe. Gleeful. OXOXOX

  18. DEBBIE says:

My son is on these really horrible drugs for his frozen shoulder and ganglion cyst. His in constant pain and discomfort. the side effects from the meds are terrible. please offer some advice on what to take and potency and how often? I don’t know what else I can do for him.
    Thanks a lot
    DEBBIE

  19. Tammy says:

When would you move to Rhys Tox 1M for back pain over the 209?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

When 200 didn’t fully act and the case is clearly a RT case, then using a higher potency is prudent. Find a materia medica on line and read up on RT. Dr. JAmes Tyler Kent is a good one. Then decide if RT fits.

  20. Kelley says:

Debbie, it sounds like you are having a rough time with your son. That must be so frustrating. Joette wasn’t being rude, she just gave you a suggestion to look into it. She has said many times that she can’t comment on a particular case, she just shares as much knowledge as she can with us.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Thanks for your support and understanding words, Kelley.

  21. Paulis Waber says:

I read this carefully because my husband has chronic low back issues. They are so severe that he’s had a number of nerve ablations to cut back the affected nerves, which then grow back. I’ve started to give him arnica for back strain because it feels muscular but now I’m thinking his best bet might be the hypericum because the nerve ablations point to it? The only other near fit is rhus tox because he needs to get up and move, but I’m hesitating on that because his pain doesn’t come from painful joints.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

      Your thinking is right on.

  22. Rachel McE says:

Thanks for the info! Wanting to try some Arnica 200 for my chronic back and shoulder muscle tension which brings on horrific tension headaches. Chiropractic helps, but who has the time and money to run to the chiropractor every time one starts to hurt? Looking for a better alternative to ibuprofen, especially since I’m expecting baby #4. Are any of the above remedies NOT advised during pregnancy? Thanks!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I used Arnica 200 during each of my pregnancies, especially during labor and after.

  23. Esther says:

Joette I am sure that somewhere I have seen you say Arnica 200/Symphytum 200 was specific for knee osteoarthritis, am I correct? Now I see you have Symphytum:200 mixed with Rhus TOX 30. Also have used Arnica 200/Rhus TOX 30. But this didn’t seem to work. There is a confusion on the group in FB
Can you clarify this please. Thank you

  24. Judy Leahy says:

Along similar lines, if taking Symphytum and Rhus for other protocols but not together, should these be repeated for the protocol described above, or should a different remedy be use? Any clarification would be helpful. Thanks.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

If Symph and RT are being taken for another condition, they should act for that one as well as back pain. Its not a good plan to double up.

  25. Carrie says:

I get joint pains in Specific fingers that ultimately end with a knot or bigger k uncle. Would one of these work for that condition? I’m only 41.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Choose the one that most closely fits the description of your symptoms.

  26. xiroyma says:

    Good MORNING,
Is this remedy also good for tailbone pain? tailbone pain after C-section (5yrs ago)

  27. Ashley Dalme says:

Joette, I’m giving my dad the protocol for chronic back pain and sciatica, Symphytum 200 mixed with Hypericum 200, and I’ve listened to your podcasts about chronic issue dosing. It’s been 2 weeks and he is already commenting that the episodes are less intense, furthur apart, and pain is a little better. Should he take a break and see how he feels or continue for the full 8 weeks? I also read and hear a lot about stopping deep action remedies if dosing too frequently.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

When a medicine is acting but not finished, we rarely halt its use.

  28. Ange says:

Hi is Symphytum 200 safe to take while pregnant? I have arthritis in my knee and and a bone spur in my ankle joint that I want to dissolve.

    Thanks, love your blogs!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I actually used it myself during my last pregnancy.

  29. Ashley says:

My dad has been taking the hypernicum 200 mixed with Symphytum 200 for shooting pains down his legs once a day. After 8 weeks he notices a slight improvement in pain level and time between episodes. I would like to see more improvement, but now I regret waiting to see what once a day would do and should’ve followed the protocol for twice a day. The pain level has gone from an 8 to a 6 and from constant pain to about an hour between episodes of shooting pains down
His legs that he describes as sharp ice prickling pains and stinging. Should we reasses, change dosage, or frequency. Now when he runs out of the remedies he does notice the pain is worse until he orders more. Any chance we could get to a point where he needs it less frequently or pain down to a 1 or 2? Thanks!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

If a medicine is acting, why be afraid of using it? We use our medicines as they’re needed. If every hour is required, we fallow the need of the sufferer, particularly in regards to pain. If once eoD is required, then that’s how we approach it.

You need to join or start a study group which is where I teach this. Go to the front page of this website and click on the panel that says “Gateway to Homeopathy” OR call the office and talk to Eileen. She’ll get you up and running.

      1. Elizabeth Lori Hankkila says:

Is hypericum safe for pregnancy? I’m wanting to recommend something for my pregnant friend with a herniated disc.

        1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I will not tell you that a specific medicine is safe for your pregnant friend.

  30. Ashley says:

Thank you! I know I need to join a study group ASAP. I was following the Banerji Protocol for chronic back pain and sciatica, Symphytum 200 mixed with Hypericum 200, taken twice daily. And after listening to the chronic case podcast I had my dad take this for 8 weeks, but I wanted to see what once a day did. After 8 weeks, symptoms are improving, but not gone, so that’s where I’m stuck on what to do next. I just want to do it correctly.

    1. Dee says:

The correct protocol is to take the remedies 2 times per day, not once.

  31. Anu says:

Madam I am suffering from knee pain since 1 year.My husband forcibly bent my knee during sexual intercourse.now I can’t stand for more than 10 min and climbing stairs is difficult for me.If I stand more than 1 hour it will cause pain and swelling in my knees.I experience a aching type of pain in my knees. If I stand for more than 10 min I experience a sprained feeling in medial side of my knee.iam 34 yrs old.i tried rhustox and arnica with no relief.now I am using guaiacum tinture 10 drops 2 times daily.pls help me mam.iam in great mental trauma

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Please read the post carefully and make your choice accordingly. Follow the remedy you have chosen for at least a month to know if its correct.

  32. Kim says:

Hi Joette, I am sharing all this homeopathy with our next generation, my older daughters, they are using it more and more..I wanted to know what would one take if arthritis is in the toes? Thank you.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Arthritis in hips, toes, elbows, back…all the same.
Meanwhile Kim, consider organizing your family or joining a study group (Gateway to Homeopathy) so you can learn more, faster and better. Regardless of your experience, my promise is that it will do that. If you don’t know how to join a group, let me know and I’ll get you connected.

  33. Amy says:

    Hi Joette,
Thank you for sharing your knowledge. The Banerji Protocol for plantar fasciitis has helped me greatly…symphytum and RT. I think I will use Ruta and RT for my husbands swollen, golf ball size fluid filled elbow bursitis. I’m hoping arnica gel will help as well.
    Blessings,

    Amy

Thanks so much for your information. I have referenced your website and referred others to it for years!

If a person was trying to restore movement in a joint (like the elbow) after surgery, and the tightness of muscles, ligaments, and the such seem to be impeding movement, what would you suggest?

Reading this entry, I would lean towards arnica, Bryonia, and symphytum because of inflammation, pain, and the need to restore movement.

3 sessions of PT are happening along with home exercises, but unlike how you described Rhus Tox for pain that lessens once warmed up; this type of pain is constant tightness and even worse after stretching (although necessary). Is there a different remedy more appropriate?

    1. Cassie says:

Great question. I was searching for this information too, only for a wrist rather than an elbow. Can you please share what was helpful in your situation?

years back I busted a pinky toe kicking a newly placed piece of furniture! The toe looked a half inch shorter immediately but knowing they only tape broken toes I thought “I can do THAT!” and did my go-to Arnica for the tissue damage that would come! After 4 days of a grinding glass like feeling when I stepped on it I finally got xrays and the nurse laughed “you know we only tape toes? you don’t even have bruises!?” I said “that is because I use homeopathy! I have a second remedy to use that will heal the bone quicker but it requires the bones MUST be lined up right”. She snickered but did the xrays. She had a different demeanor after that when she said “It IS broken” She handed me a picture disc and said “see a surgeon and I wouldn’t take that other remedy!” When I looked at the pictures on my PC it showed the end of the pinky bone broken off and flipped up on top of the bone behind it requiring surgery.

I have the most unusual nerve pain that has been presenting for the past three years and is getting worse and worse. If I wear a necklace, scarf, collared shirt or jacket or a crewneck T-shirt, I start to have radiating nerve/neck pain that starts at the top of my back, where a racer back bra would sit, and continues up in the back of my neck. I will often have a bad neck ache and headache the next day if I force myself to wear one of these items for a period of time. After reading this article, I believe the choice remedy would be Hypericum 200. I am just trying to figure out how often I should take a dose? Every hour? Three times a day? And from what I gather I should be giving this remedy a month to see if I see improvement before I decide to try a different remedy if it doesn’t work?

    1. Jennifer says:

Or do my symptoms sound like they could be fibromyalgia? I also have chemical sensitivities, hypersensitivity, memory impairment and foggy brain. If so, I should try the protocol Rhus tox 30c mixed with symphytom 200c, right?

      1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I can’t tell you what you ought to take but the protocol for fibromyalgia is indeed Symphytum/RT.

  37. Robin DeLorenzo says:

Hi. I read through this page and I’m wondering your thoughts on a muscle knot? I get it in the same place a couple times a year. Usually in a day or two it works itself out. It’s a week now. It started in between my bottom 2 ribs and I’ve been trying to stim and massage it out. No luck. Is Arnica a remedy for this as well?

  38. Trina says:

Hello Joette, would you be able to comment on using arnica 200 to help a cancer patient who is undergoing strong chemo and is feeling discomfort but wondered if it’s generally a safe thing to use during chemo?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I have no knowledge of Arnica nor any homeopathic for that matter causing a problem with chemo nor any medical procedure. Having said this, I don’t give specific advice on this forum.

      1. Trina says:

Thank you for that answer. I hadn’t either but wanted to ask the expert!! I appreciate your time and thank you again.

  39. Tammy says:

I have ruptured disc’s in my back along with nerve damage and arthritis. It is so debilitating sometimes. I am an active person who hates not being able to do what I want to and the doctors want to do surgery. Of course that’s not what I want, I am only 47 and I have already had one discectomy in my low back I don’t want to have more if I can help it. I don’t like taking heavy drugs for the pain but right now that doesn’t even touch the pain. I am willing to try anything natural. Please please help!!!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

I can’t give personal, medical advice on this forum but if you are interested in working privately with me, you may call or email my office.
Having said this, should you be so inclined, I offer an on-line course titled “Pain” that you may find useful.

    2. JT says:

Tammy, that Pain Course of Joette’s is absolutely amazing and well worth the time and cost! I have been able to help friends, family members and my dog with pain from arthritis, concussions, injuries, surgery, headaches, teething, knee pain, broken bones, and several other causes, and they are all delighted as you might imagine. I don’t even care that some of my friends think it’s just a placebo… I’ve seen homeopathy work too many times. And my dogs and babies don’t do the placebo effect!

  40. Regina says:

Every time I take Rhus tox I end up getting more pain even knowing I’m using the correct remedy. No matter the problem it causes the pain to worsen after about two weeks of use. Arthritis, planter fasciitis, fibromyalgia, you name it. I always have to stop it. I don’t know if you can answer this here but what is the most suitable replacement for rhus tox or would it be specific to the condition? Oh, love being a Mighty and praying we get a consultation soon.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

Any time a homeopathic is used and it causes symptoms that persist, it’s a sign that it is the wrong medicine. This means it’s time to move on to another, better chosen one. Consider others such as Symphytum, Ruta, Arnica, Bryonia.

  41. Meraf says:

Hi Joette, I have two questions:

    1. My mother is currently on the Symp 200 mixed with Arnica 200 for osteoarthritis of the knees and I am glad to report that she has shown noticeable improvement in just 3 months! God bless you for these FREE blogs and podcasts! We are definitely going to continue on that protocol for her knee. My question is how to approach arthritis in a different area. We recently found out that she has osteoarthritis of the back (degenerative joint disease) along with osteoporosis. Can she take Symp 200 mixed with Rhus Tux 30 while also taking Symp 200/Arnica 200? Is there a reason why the protocol for arthritis of the knee is different than the general protocol for arthritis? I am just a bit confused because I have heard you mention that how we approach arthritis is the same regardless of what body part is affected.

    2. I understand that when you mix two remedies, they form a new medicine. So does that mean it is ok to take the same remedy in two different protocols. For instance, both these protocols call for Symp 200:
Symp 200/Arnica 200 for arthritis of the knee
Symp 200/Calc Phos 3 for osteoporosis

    I appreciate all the help!!!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

I’m happy to know that you’re paying attention to my podcasts and blogs but If you’re not a member of my Gateway to Homeopathy Study Groups or a student of my courses, I urge you to do so. These groups and courses are key to your understanding and are a better place to ask questions that are more in-depth such as these.
But to answer simply, remember that these medicines are not of the synthetic, side effect ilk. One may try this or that without grave consequence.

  42. Radha says:

I am a bit confused about 2 protocols that seem to be for the same condition? 1)Symphitum 200 and Hpericum 200 is for chronic back pain and 2) Sympthitum 200 + rhus tox 30 is also for muscle pain in the back or achy joints/arthritis. are both protocols not for the same condition? Maybe I am misunderstanding something

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

If you read your materia medica it will offer you clues into how to approach differentials.
Hypericum is specific for extreme pain that’s often nerve-related while RT is associated with overuse, stiffness, < on 1st movement, etc.

  43. Heather Wagner says:

I am wondering where further healing can be found where there was a condition of a grade 3 spondylolisthesis on L4 and L5 where surgery has never been performed. This is a 3 year old injury but likely happened smoothly over the years. Much relief has been found found through the use of RHUS Tox200 and Aesc. Hippo 200. I have recently found Symphytum but wondering if that could help this situation if there is a piece of bone that has fractured on one of the vertebrae. I’m not sure how that can all come back into alignment. On a side note this person’s hips are unstable and particularly the left hip comes out of alignment often. The main source of pain had been surrounding the hip/leg despite the injury being in the back. Also the arms go numb and hurt at night which hypericum helps. Pain management is rather well during the day but the pain and inflammation at night can become extreme.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

How do we know if a well-chosen homeopathic will offer relief?
      We give it a try.

  44. Heather Wagner says:

Thank you for taking the time to reply, I’m taking your Gateway courses and it’s been life changing already. I’m so excited. There’s so much more to learn and I plan on it!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

‘Happy to hear. Keep learning; you’ll be amazed at what this medicine can do.

    RHUS TOXICODENDRON DOSE 1MK
How many granules do we have to take for very violent back pain? Is it 1 granule every few hours till the pain subsides or is it 4 granules? Many thanks 🙂

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

THe number of pills that comprise a dose is printed on the side of the bottle.

  47. Teresa says:

Hi, my MIL uses arnica for joint pain but after reading this about rhus tox it helped tremendously. But then she started getting headaches and as soon as she stopped rhus tox they went away and the joint pain is back. How often can she take it for daily pain?

  48. coco says:

Keep waking up in the middle of the night because of old left-sided Sciatica with pain and numbness around ankle / toes / feet / knee / tailbone area. Sometimes from computer work or from staying on feet a long time.

Only a combination of walking, massage and heatpad helps for a while. Have bruised looking inner ankle area since injury in early teen.

Tried Rhus 30 + Hypericum 200 twice/day. May be ok for pain but not the uncomfortable numbness.

Would Gnaphalium or Colocynth help ? On it’s own or mixed with the above ?

    Hopeful thanks.
