Do Antibiotics Make You Fat? Homeopathic Philosophy Knows

Fat young boy2The story of antibiotics makes me sad sometimes. When penicillin was introduced in the 1940s, the medical community had such high hopes for the new “miracle drug.”

They thought they had found the answer to human illness.

In fact, this one discovery pretty much launched the pharmaceutical industry, which became dedicated to the development of even more drugs and who set out to deliberately alter the entire paradigm of Western medicine into the “there’s the symptom; here’s the drug” attitude we see today.

Little did those first researchers know what they were allowing to run riot on humanity!

An entire medical system became dedicated to suppressing symptoms through the use of ever-more-powerful drugs. Not unlike much of modern medicine’s exploits, it’s a sad story of a good idea gone wrong.

But when I think about the damage done to the health of so many through the use of these drugs, I feel more mad than sad.

As a homeopathic consultant, educator and student for nearly 28 years, I have seen case after case of chronic illness that can be traced back to well-intentioned doctors who used one drug after another to manage the symptoms of simple conditions such as fevers, earaches, sore throats, acne, eczema, rashes and gastrointestinal problems.

All of which are easily and swiftly removed with homeopathic remedies and without side effects.

Sincerity is overrated.

And the result of the onslaught of these drugs?

Hay fever, asthma, ADHD, MRSA, autism, chronic fatigue, allergies, eczema and other life-altering skin conditions, food intolerances and many other chronic illnesses can be found at a far higher rate than ever before.

Most of these conditions were unheard of in the 1930s.

And now add obesity to the list.

You may have heard of the USA Today article about the link between antibiotics and childhood obesity. (If you haven’t, it’s worth your time to look it up.) According to USA Today, a new study shows that children who receive numerous antibiotics before age 2 are “slightly more likely than others to become obese.”

The study looked at the health records of nearly 65,000 children from 2001 to 2013 and found that nearly 70% received oral antibiotics by age 2, with an average of 2.3 rounds of antibiotics per child. Approximately 23% of the children in the study were overweight by age 2, 30% by age 3 and 33% by age 4. Approximately 10% were considered obese by age 2, 14% by age 3 and 15% by age 4. (That seems like a bit more than “slightly more likely” to me!)

Where’s the science behind those pediatricians’ decisions to even give a child under the age of two an average of 2.3 rounds of antibiotics?

The article quotes coauthor Charles Bailey, an assistant professor at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, as saying, “Many scientists are now concerned that exposure to antibiotics – from medication, food or even tap water – has the potential to kill off some of the beneficial bacteria that may protect people from chronic diseases.”

This is not the only study exploring the effect of antibiotics on human health. These studies demonstrate something that few people understand about the human body.

We’re not alone.

We are actually an entire ecosystem. The human body hosts around 100 trillion microbes, and a growing body of evidence about this “microbiome” suggests that these microbes play a key role in keeping us healthy.

Our body is designed with a wonderful defense system that identifies foreign “bad” microbes and eliminates them without harming the benign and helpful microbes.

Antibiotics, on the other hand, slaughter the good along with the bad. It’s a sledgehammer approach to health, and homeopaths have known this all along.

But now the general public and modern medicine are getting a handle on it.

However, I’d wager that nothing will change because the pediatricians don’t have any other method to treat infections other than antibiotics.

Instead, you’re likely to hear words such as, “Yes, this is an antibiotic, but it’s a mild one,” or “This is not like those nasty ones we used to use.”

Meanwhile, like a dinosaur dragging through Manhattan, conventional pediatrics is looking more archaic than ever.

For simple acute illnesses and first aid situations, instead of falling back on the drugs of the 1940s, a better solution can be found in your homeopathy kit, a good book on how to use it or a course or two.

If you’ve been reading my blogs, you already know this.

The right remedy will quickly restore health without damaging the body.

Done.

But the really good news? If you are one of the millions of people in North America who grew up in this pill-pushing, shot-giving medical system and experience chronic problems as a result, homeopathy can still help!

With the right homeopathic protocols, even chronic sufferers can be restored to health, balance and well-being!

Refer to my old blogs, keep up with the new ones, and get smart on how to treat your microbes.

That’s homeopathy!

OK, I know what you’re waiting for … the protocol that will help obesity, right?

Well, for anyone with gut issues as a result of antibiotics, if there is bloating (and this must be present), gurgling, distention and gas, the best choice, per the Banerji Protocols, is

  1) Lycopodium 200 mixed with Arsenicum album 6X, twice daily.

Additionally, I’d add

  2) Calc carb 30, once daily for the resulting obesity.

Sometimes other remedies must also be considered. For example, if this is presenting during puberty or if acne or eczema is associated with the condition.

Hence, there’s generally more to this than just the two above remedies, depending on age, hormone issues, gender, etc., but here’s a good start for your child.

I am a homeopath with a worldwide practice working with families and individuals via Zoom. I'm also a teacher and most importantly, a mom who raised my now-adult children depending on homeopathy over the last 31 years. I lived decades of my life with food intolerances, allergies, and chemical sensitivities until I was cured with homeopathy, so I understand pain, anxiety, and suffering. You may feel that your issues are more severe or different than anyone else’s, but I have seen it all in my practice and in my work in India. My opinion is that nothing has come close to the reproducible, safe and effective results that my clients, students and I have achieved with homeopathy.

Call today and learn how homeopathy might just be the missing piece in your health strategy.

That’s because antibiotics kill out the normal gut flora….leading to digestive issues and decreased immunity…because 80% of our immune system works through the gut. I’ve had terrible experiences with antibiotics in the past…and I’m a medical doctor..so I’m now on a mission for natural cures and I’m working on a natural Health and Wellness plan through right foods, spices, healthy oils…etc…hoping to publish soon. Is there anyway I could contact you personally?….thanks.

  2. Marla says:

Joette, I have Lycopodium 200 mixed with Arsenicum 3 on hand. Is Lycopodium 200/Arsenicum 6 a better choice, or would the Arsenicum 3 be sufficient? Thanks!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

3 or 6 are both good choices. 6 is more readily available to the public.

  3. Linda says:

Thanks Joette, I had heard recently that obesity was finally being linked to artificial sweeteners, and now antibiotics. Fascinating! Both are gut issues, and I am waiting for the day when GMO will be revealed for what it is, and it’s part in ruining guts as well. Like you said, even though this industry started with good intentions, greed is the only reason that our masses are still stuck with whatever the med/pharm/food companies hand out. We are an impoverished nation indeed where ignorance reigns. I want to be ready and armed with real solutions like homeopathy, cell salts and the WAPF diet, when the masses are ready to hear the truth (of course our smaller circles are ready now, and our families reap the benefits of the truth!) Thank you for continuing to share. – Linda

  4. Gay says:

Hi Joette, I’ve had the bloating, gas and resulting pain in my stomach area for a couple years. Based on a previous article of yours I used Lycopodium 200 for about two weeks and it has eliminated the pain and bloating. I occasionally still have a small amount of gas. Would doing this protocol still be beneficial even though the bloating really is no longer present? I am over weight and still working on digestion. I have been on GAPS for the last year and have lost about 30 lbs with that but the weight loss has pretty much stalled and I still have some skin issues, although better. I am starting to feel GAPS has done pretty much all it can do for me and believe homeopathy is the answer to correct the few lingering issues. I am so grateful to you and your website which gives me the tools to help my family and I. I thank God daily for blessing me with finding your site and giving you the knowledge and desire to share with others.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

HI GAy, I can’t direct you in this setting, but generally speaking, one would take a remedy for a chronic gut issue for a minimum of 2 months at which time the protocol would be assessed and perhaps continued or not for another 2 months. I agree that in many people, diet can take health only so far. I call the remaining, the niggley 40%. After working with Gaps people for years, I believe that its a good start and the finishing step is homeopathy. (Meanwhile, Gaps diet remains a good foundation.)

I’m delighted you’ve benefited from these wonderful Banerji Protocols. It is my intention to give away as many as possible.

Should you be interested, I’ll be presenting an on-line course in the next few weeks on the subject of skin and I’ll notify anyone on my email list. It is of course somewhat gut based because the skin is interchangeable with the gastro- intestinal in many chronic conditions.

Please pass on the information to others who might benefit.

      1. Gay says:

Thank you Joette! I think I am going to try the protocol mentioned above and see if I can’t get further healing. I am very interested in your skin course since I do have some issues there as well. I had hoped to be able to take your recent gut healing course but the timing wasn’t good. We own our own business and invoices have been slow to being paid :/ Hopefully that issue will improve in time for me to take the skin course. Thank you again for all you do!

      2. Gay says:

Oh, and my daughter and I have been sharing your site with everyone that will listen! She is 21 and has had acne issues since about the age of 14. She had worked with a classical homeopath but did not get very good results. GAPS helped a little. We read your article on Pippa and Pimples and she did that protocol. I am happy, no ecstatic, to report that it has cleared her face!!! We tell everyone about it!

        1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I’m delighted! That’s the Banerji Protocol for you!

And yes, pls pass on the good word.

        2. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Hi Gay, This is the kind of feedback that makes my heart sing.

  5. Princess says:

I contacted you today concerning recurrent UTI’s with years of antibiotic use, I now have another UT and I need advice as to what to use…thanks.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I’m sorry, but this is not a forum in which an individual’s case may be taken.

  6. Mary Kate says:

Joette, how long do you generally recommend that this, or other Banerji protocols, be followed for? Thank you for all you do and share!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

It depends on the condition. But a good rule of thumb is until there is improvement, then stop for awhile and see how long it takes before the remedies are needed again. This will often determine how frequently the remedy is needed.

  7. Sherri says:

I have not tried this protocol yet, because I don’t have bloating every day, just every once in a while. How often does bloating need to be presenting?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

It would need to be a significant symptom. If is only occasional, the protocol would not likely fit.

  8. kim says:

My bloating is usually after I eat, and same with gas. is that in line with using this remedy, or would the bloated and gassy feeling need to be present even before meals? I am putting together a study group and love all your information and help Joette. Thank you.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Bloating and gassy feeling can be at any time including after meals. As long as its a rather consistent concern, it fits.

  9. Mick says:

I have a question about topical antibiotics such as triple-antibiotic ointment for cuts and scrapes. Today, unbeknownst to me, my dad put such an ointment on a scrape on my little boy’s knee. Do I need to worry about this antibiotic negatively affecting him? We are on week 6 of doing a few protocols that I learned in the GGBG course. Do I need to administer Camphor to antidote the antibiotic and then start the protocols over? Or am I overreacting and overthinking this?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I don’t worry about locally applied antibiotics affecting the gut.

  10. Mick says:

Thank you, Joette. And thank you for all that you do to help us learn how to help ourselves and our loved ones through homeopathy. Oh, and happy Feast of Corpus Christi (well, for another 10 minutes or so).

P.S. Some friends and I are going to start the Gateway to Homeopathy study group curriculum in a couple of weeks. We’re all very excited.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I’m happy for you, Mick. If you decide to have me join in on Zoom and answer questions at the end of your 8 weeks, I’d very much look forward to it. We speak the same language.

      1. Mick says:

Joette, my friends and I have done the first two lessons in Gateway to Homeopathy, and we’re loving it! We’ve decided that we’d like to try to schedule you for the live Q&A for our eighth class, so I’ll be calling your office on Monday in order to set that up. We are all very grateful and excited that we’ll have the opportunity to talk to you. 🙂

        1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

‘Love it! My favorite thing to do.

  11. S P JENA says:

Hi Joette – I am taking the Calc Carb 1M weekly( allergy protocol ). In that case can the Calc Carb 30 daily dose( mentioned above for obesity ) be waived off ?

  12. Collie says:

Hi Jolette, I was thrilled to find this article in your files. My son’s antibiotic damage (he was prescribed 3 rounds of antibiotics back to back at age two for bronchitis. At age 7 suddenly his muscle tone decreased and my healthy weight, fighting fit, well toned boy started a downward slide to now flabby, unfit and overweight child at 10 years. It breaks mine and his hearts. We are already seeing a classical homeopath who we are having wonderful results with for other matters. But can you tell me does the Banjeri Protocol turn the lack of muscle tone around?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

If you’re seeing improvement with your homeopath, I urge you to stay with him/her recommendations.

  13. Janet says:

My daughter is starting the BP that you stated above for gastrointestinal issues this week. I have bought both remedies, but I read to use arsenicum album 3. Is that ok or should I also buy the 6 potency? Thank you!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Potency matters when it comes to protocols.

  14. Janet says:

I forgot to ask if I could add Bovista to this BP to uproot food intolerances particularly gluten? Or will this protocol itself take care of that? I can’t tell you how much I’ve learned from you site, class, and material medica. You’ve been a blessing in my life. I’m all in!!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I can’t tell you what protocol you ought to be using since I don’t know your case. And I’m delighted that you’re excited about homeopathy. But should you be interested in learning precisely how stacking homeopathic medicines is done and how to manage cases, I urge you to consider joining my online course Good Gut Bad Gut. I specifically cover the how and the details of following through.

  15. Kim Brett says:

Joette, since you mention it, how would the obesity protocol change for a child who has gone through puberty and has occasional pimples please?
