Nellie and her baby

SUMMER. We crave it throughout the cold winters (especially here in New York), but when it finally arrives, it can be a fair-weather friend.

We’ve all said it once, maybe even a hundred times, when discovering illnesses or conditions in our children.

“Wait, what’s THAT?!”

And doesn’t it surprise us in the summer? Who gets sick in the summer?

Here’s a story that may help your family someday.

Or maybe you’re currently living it.

Meet Nellie.

Nellie’s first baby was two months old, and her in-laws were coming to meet the baby for the first time in just a few days. She was still taking it easy, but she had a few items she needed to pick up at the grocery store before they arrived.

It was July in the Southeast. The high for the day was in the 90s, and the humidity felt like it was at 1,000 percent.

She dressed her baby as lightly as possible and secured her in her car seat.

Twenty minutes later, she’d parked at the store and was crossing items off her list as her baby slept in her stroller.

Nellie arrived home, got the baby inside and unloaded the car. Time to check the baby’s diaper, Nellie lifted the baby out of the car seat carrier and laid her on the changing table.

“WHAT is that?” Nellie gasped, her eyes drawn to a fine, bumpy rash across her baby’s arms and neck.

The rash looked angry and was clearly bothering her little one.

This new mom stifled her immediate urge to call her pediatrician. Confident in her ability to care for her child, she pulled out a medical reference book for infants and leafed through the pages until she got to the section on rashes.

Nellie perused the pictures and descriptions until she found a condition that looked like her baby’s rash.

It was heat rash.

Heat rash, or miliaria, is a condition in which tiny bumps (that can range from pink to clear) form over an area of the body. It’s caused when blocked pores keep sweat from escaping.

Luckily, when Nellie got pregnant, she began studying homeopathy, as she’d heard it could help during pregnancy and childbirth. Now that she had a diagnosis, she turned to her favorite homeopathy reference book, which identified a few choice remedies for heat rash.

Remedies for Heat Rash:

There are a few medicines that should be considered when dealing with heat rash, and each has its own specific set of indicators.

Choose one remedy from the list below and continue with it for a couple of days to determine if your remedy choice is correct. If you note improvement, continue on a schedule of about every 6 to 12 hours until the rash is noticeably better.

1) Your first choice if it’s not clear which one to choose:

Arsenicum album 6X

  • Itching and burning with restlessness

  • Persistence of complaints during recession of itching

2) When there are hive-like eruptions:

Apis mellifica 30

  • Skin feels hot with raised, red shiny eruptions

  • Sudden puffing up of the whole body

3) When the symptoms are intense:

Belladonna 30

  • Violent sudden outbreak of prickly rash

  • Skin red, hot, painful

  • Alternate redness and paleness of the skin

4) When the rash is red with raised blotches that sting:

Urtica urens 30

  • There is itching and burning

  • Skin feels worse from cold bathing

  • Skin feels better from rubbing, which looks like nettle rash

Nellie chose Belladonna 30 because the rash was crimson red and hot, hot, hot while her legs were pale.

Since the baby was only two months old, she decided to dilute the hard little pills in an ounce of water and administer it in droplets into her mouth instead of expecting her to negotiate swallowing pills.

She gave her Belladonna 30 at noon and again just around dinner time. By the next morning, the redness was not a screaming red, but she gave Baby another dose at dawn and noon. By dinner on the second day, her skin was nearly clear.

Just in time for her in-laws' arrival.

This was Nellie’s first footstep into the world of self–reliance in treating her newborn.

She made a quiet decision to saturate herself with more homeopathy tools.

That night while she sat with her husband and in-laws holding her baby in her arms, she ran her fingers over the supple skin of her baby’s neck and arms. It was velvety smooth, and it elevated her beyond what she felt before the rash had arrived.

It wasn’t just a mother’s loving touch she experienced.

It was a silent contentment teaming with unprecedented joy and pride that comes from knowing that she had cured her baby.

No drugs.

No side effects.

Inexpensive and, most importantly, curative.

I am a homeopath with a worldwide practice working with families and individuals via Zoom. I'm also a teacher and most importantly, a mom who raised my now-adult children depending on homeopathy over the last 31 years. I lived decades of my life with food intolerances, allergies, and chemical sensitivities until I was cured with homeopathy, so I understand pain, anxiety, and suffering. You may feel that your issues are more severe or different than anyone else’s, but I have seen it all in my practice and in my work in India. My opinion is that nothing has come close to the reproducible, safe and effective results that my clients, students and I have achieved with homeopathy.

Call today and learn how homeopathy might just be the missing piece in your health strategy.

Homeopathy doesn't "treat" an illness; it addresses the entire person as a matter of wholeness that is an educational process, not a medical one. Joette believes that the advice and diagnosis of a physician is often in order.

My Baby is 2 year old. She has HB only 8.8 Gms (weight is 11.10 Kg). Please suggest any medicine to improve HB.

Homeopathy is medicine and given this, I need to make clear that this condition would require the case being taken. Should you be interested in discussing this with me, feel free to contact my office.

  2. Martha says:

Hi Joette, Thank you for this informative blog. If a child tends to get a rash during the summer months closer to the groin area (possibly jock itch) would the same remedies as noted above be considered? I noticed my son tends to get this only in the summer months when there is more of a tendency towards increased sweating and moisture due to high temperatures and going into the water and then sitting with a wet bathing suit. Martha

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

It depends on whether the rash is indeed jock itch which would be a fungal infection. I have not written on the subject of skin yeast infections yet, but thanks for the suggestion.

  3. Jackie says:

My daughter has a rash similar to what Martha described. It started on the inner thigh area where her skin meets the outside of her diaper… It has been several months now and has recently spread to inside her diaper, her tummy, and a couple spots that come and go on her face. I am treating her with antimonium crud and arsenicum album per the red, itchy rash protocol (for over 4 weeks now) and It is not showing signs of improvement. Our family Dr suspects yeast, but the rash is not responding well to antifungal cream either (we are desperate for itch relief at night, or we wouldn’t be using it). She is also on Bovista per the GGBG course, and I recently added Merc sol for fungal patches on the skin. Please write more on this soon, I am at a loss as to how to proceed!!

We like to give chronic conditions more time on the protocols while watching for small changes. Feel free to listen to my podcast Why You May be Disillusioned With Homeopathy and it will give you more info., hence a little more confidence.

  4. martha says:

Jackie – Hang in there with Bovista and other remedies. My son, who is 14 years old, has had very nice improvements over the past 6 months on a number of remedies that he has needed. The tiny pimples that covered his arms from shoulder to wrist have improved by 50%. His sensitivity to changes in weather conditions have also shown marked improvements. In addition to the homeopathic remedies, I am also giving my son organic coconut oil multiple times a day in green juice smoothies and quinoa cereal. Coconut oil can help with fungal, viral and bacterial issues. If your daughter can tolerate raw cow or goat milk kefir that will also replenish good bacteria in her gut and help her skin. Hope this was of some encouragement.

    1. Jackie says:

Martha, thank you, that is encouraging! I have been slathering her in coconut oil and tallow balm. She has been on raw milk since she turned 1 (she’s 22 months) and I try to make most of our yogurt. She has also been on probiotics off and on. It’s frustrating not knowing what type of rash it is and if I am giving her the right remedies.

I received my “top 100 remedy kit” on July 3rd. My step grandson returned from vacation on July 4th, with a rash from his waist down the back of his left leg to the back of the knee. I said nothing as my husband and his daughter discussed the rash.
We went home, and I began to search Joette Web site for the best remedy. Sad to say, I still kept quiet until the following Wednesday, when he came to my house, the rash had spread to his belly, under his arms and the right leg. I quickly gave him Apis 30c, because it seemed the best match for the symptoms. By evening, 4 doses later, he was showing signs of improvement. I gave his mother 2 more doses, for him to take the next day, Thursday. I saw them Saturday and she said the rash was very faint and almost gone. I then gave him a dose and gave his mother two more doses for that evening and the next morning. I asked her Sunday afternoon and the rash was gone. I KNOW homeopathy works!

      It’s incredible, isn’t it?

  6. Mandi says:

What can I use for a blocked sweat duct? It is swollen and red and I am placing a hot cloth onto it three times a day and taking hep sulph 200 EOD.

  7. betsyaida says:

Will Apis mellifica 30 work for hives when they are cause by stress? Meaning the person only gets hives when they get stressed or really upset. If not what is a good one for stress induced hives?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

      Ignatia 200.

  8. betsyaida says:

Weird… my question disappeard. My sister get’s hives but only when she gets stressed out or upset. is Apis mellifica 30 a good remedy for stress induced hives or would something else be better?

  9. betsyaida says:

Thank you for the ignatia suggestion above!

I just had a friend point me to your blog..briefly- I burned myself on left forearm last year and had a reaction (likely to OTC scar cream) which got infected/swelled- went to ER- steroids and antibiotic….it comes and goes, mostly when temp goes up, usually not too bad and I can tolerate it, until it goes away- however in Sept we hit 90+ for several days and it got very bad- red, burning, itchy, ozzed. It then spread to section next to it, my neck and right arm- went to dermatologist- oral steroids and steriod creams, patch test (allergic to few things), then just recovering and last week a round of new rash/hives over most of body in waves– 5th round of rash/hives…not sure which above suggestions to try. most of rash is gone, but some lingers, especially in elbow bend- gets warm at night and itch returns. tried lavendar/jojoba oil and aloe. today my chiro suggested maybe bacteria in area from before and suggested maybe to see dr and use antibiotic- any suggestions- I was ready to try it, until tonight when I listed to podcast #17. I like natural methods, but need to heal- I am stressing about it and that doesn’t help it…in Feb when it got warm, I did try sulfur (for rash with heat) and it seemed to help. so many options, overwhelmed. thanks.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I realize you’re looking for an answer on what to take/do, but I don’t offer specific advise for folks on this blog.

      1. Helen says:

I understand. May I ask in a different generic way?– the options listed in this blog for rash treatment: Arsenicum album 6x, Apis mellifica 30, Belladonna 30, Urtica urens 30 – if there’s more than one and some of the treatments are for similar issues, as a new person to this area, I am unsure which on hoeomeopath to try first, so are any of the above a more “overall treatment” that helps with others issues that is good to have available vs one that has limited use? Follow-up, is there a reliable site/place on your site/book you recommend to look up different uses for homeopath remedies? Thank you.

  11. Chloe says:

Thank you so much for this article! I developed a horrible itchy rash under my upper arms and I have had it now for 3 days and it’s driving me mad! I’m on holiday so can’t go to the Dr. I had no idea what it was, but after reading this article, I realise that it’s heat rash. I’m in London and it’s winter, and I have been bundled up in a heavy coat and really heavy scarf. Now I realise this is the culprit! I have been dabbling in many different remedies- belladonna, sepia, apis, Arsen alb, and a few others. Now I realise I have to choose one and stick with it, and take it consistently. I noticed an improvement in the burning sensation when I took sepia. But the rash wasn’t going away, so then I switched and tried something else. I read somewhere that sometimes it gets worse before it gets better. Is this true? How do I know that it’s working if it’s getting worse? Last night I took apis, but I woke up in the middle of the night and it was burning. Even my hands felt like they were burning (and the rash isn’t near my hands). It looked as though the rash had improved slightly on the left, but the right had gotten worse and was red and blotchy. Does this mean that it’s working or that I should discontinue it? Do you have a good reference book that you can recommend? Thanks so much for your advice! I love your site, it’s such an amazing resource!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

We don’t usually see an aggravation (a worsening before improvement) when using a homeopathic for an acute condition such as what you describe. Depending on the condition and severity usually, we see an improvement within minutes, hours or occasionally a few days. If things get worse, it usually means its the wrong medicine. Hence abandon it and move on to the next choice.

  12. Andria says:

Can this work for a possible sun poisoning/allergy. My daughter has a bumpy rash on hands and parts of her face. She itches it sometimes But not a lot, I have noticed no other symptom. The rash has been there over a week.
