The poor people of Flint, Michigan.

I’m trying really hard not to go off on a tangent about my thoughts surrounding the irresponsibility of government, and how we are more on our own than we'd like to believe (although I may have just done so by making that statement.)

This time, it's the local government who apparently, knowingly allowed the populace to be exposed to noteworthy amounts of lead in their municipal water system.

The families in Michigan are now left to fend for themselves, which is what we need to understand about life in the first place.

At the risk of nagging, I’ll remind you that the only one looking out for you is you.

This is an essential perspective, and the first step towards health autonomy.

You may be asking yourself what I would do if I learned that my family had been exposed to lead?

After years of homeopathic practice and relying solely on homeopathy for my family’s health care, I know the homeopathic medicines that are consistently used throughout the world to antidote heavy metals.

But if I didn't know them, I’d go to one of my many trusted (and even beat-up) repertories, such as the Homeopathic Clinical Repertory, by Robin Murphy, my voluminous notes of what I learned in my classes back in the ’80s, my files of clients I’ve worked with through the years and my notes of case observations from my fellowships with the Banerjis in Calcutta.

1) First, I’d consider Alumina.

It has been consistently shown that lead poisoning can be treated using this powerhouse homeopathic.

Sometimes it takes a few short few months. Sometimes many.

Homeopathic literature consistently indicates Alumina to be a good choice. For example, the Concordant Materia Medica, by Frans Vermuelen, tells us that it is a specific antidote for lead. But it is commonly described throughout most all other materia medicas as well.

Alumina is reported to stimulate brain function, while also correcting other neurological symptoms generated by the presence of high amounts of lead in the body.

Lead poisoning can induce specific physical symptoms such as tiredness, fatigue and even stupor, as well as mental confusion.

2) Another great homeopathic that has been used as a general antidote for lead poisoning (as well as mercury, I might add), is Causticum.

This medicine is credited with correcting nerve paralysis and urinary weakness induced by the toxic effects of lead.

Homeopaths worldwide have employed the use of Causticum to combat such effects as lethargy, mental confusion, muscle weakness and ligament fatigue, to name a few.

There are other important remedies to consider as well.

Plumbum (homeopathic lead) may also be considered, but I have decided to include the differentials between only Alumina and Causticum because they are where my experience lies.

The method is to choose between one of these medicines, based on the symptoms that present most prominently.

For my family, I would employ it in a low potency, such as 6X or C, 12X or C or 30X or C, once or twice daily until great improvement was established.

I can’t tell you exactly what to do for your family and community. I can only share with you what I would do for my own.

One caveat: It is not prudent to use a homeopathic medicine without evidence that it is fully warranted.

In other words, these remedies are to be used only if lead poisoning is determined in conjunction with reliable testing provided by a healthcare professional.

Join me in spreading the word about the gift that is homeopathy.

Be ready, help others and GET THE LEAD OUT!

I am a homeopath with a worldwide practice working with families and individuals via Zoom. I'm also a teacher and most importantly, a mom who raised my now-adult children depending on homeopathy over the last 31 years. I lived decades of my life with food intolerances, allergies, and chemical sensitivities until I was cured with homeopathy, so I understand pain, anxiety, and suffering. You may feel that your issues are more severe or different than anyone else’s, but I have seen it all in my practice and in my work in India. My opinion is that nothing has come close to the reproducible, safe and effective results that my clients, students and I have achieved with homeopathy.

Call today and learn how homeopathy might just be the missing piece in your health strategy.

Thank you so much for this valuable information. I will send this to the Mayor Karen Weaver. I feel so bad for these communities and this is a national time bomb that every community is facing whether they know it or not. Ann Arbor Mich has a dioxane plumb that is in their underground water that they are not doing much about plus a water quality report back in 2001 showed they had chromium d in their drinking water. Being a Michigan resident living between Flint to the north 1 hr away and Ann Arbor 30 mins away I am thankful for well water that I have, and had tested and treat for arsenic in house.

  2. Rachel says:

Having many amalgam fillings would it be reasonable to assume that my children and I have been exposed to mercury and would benefit from Causticum?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Only if there are symptoms of mercury poisoning or elevated levels detected by tests, etc.

  3. LeeAnn says:

Incredible timing! I just discovered that the bathtub in my daughters bathroom is covered in lead based paint after testing it this weekend. I took her to get a blood test today and praying that her lead levels are not elevated. If they are I will definitely be using one of the remedies you just wrote about. Thank you for sharing all of your incredible knowledge Joette!

  4. Wes says:

A number of years ago, after working with a lot of remodeling and soldering with lead on copper pipes, I was diagnosed with “off the charts lead in my system” I went through a series of IV chelation sessions and when finished, it was below detection in my system.

    1. Vince says:

What was the blood lead levels like before and after the IV chelations?

  5. LisaMaryT says:

Thank-you for your help. I found you recently through the Heal your gut and Fibromyalgia summits. I have studied homeopathy for 20+ years, have been a patient of a professional homeopath when I could afford it, and for a few years have used a pendulum to help further guide me in improving my health. I am 52 and have had lifelong health challenges. In Oct 2016, the lead on my provoked urine test was 38 and should be <2. Antimonium & thallium were also high. Nickel and some others were at the upper allowable ranges. I have used causticum on & off for years and did take some plumbum individually since October. One of the remedies I've used is HVS Laboratories (previously Hobon) Metals, a combination remedy with 9 ingredients including Alumina. What do you generally think of combination remedies such as this or the many others available? I see a holistic MD but haven't tolerated the chelating supplements DMSA or EDTA so am sticking with homeopathics. One symptom was gum irritation as if my pockets were getting deeper (I have 3 pockets at 4mm which is borderline for periodontal disease) and I thought this could be due to having 7 old (probably nickel based) crowns and 1 high noble bridge. I do also have a Holistic Dentist & future dental work will be non-metal.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

If you’re asking me if I believe that pre-made combination remedies will act, I’m afraid I don’t have a lot of experience with them in order to offer a worthy opinion. If you’ve seen improvement then I’d assume that that is a possible indication.
‘Happy to hear you have a holistic dentist and that this will periodically be checked.

  6. M. says:

Will Alumina work for too much copper in your system as well?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

It doesn’t show in my repertory, so I’d say no.

  7. Karen says:

Could you write an article about remedies for different emotional issues? I think My mom is feeling a lot of anxiety lately. She is in her 70’s – no retirement $ to count on (just her SS/widow). She tutors and substitute teaches for money. Anyway, she has most of her kids around close by – but I’m starting to think that she is feeling overwhelmed and tired with money and kids/grandkids needing her to do this or that for them etc. Lately she has mentioned that she is thinking about moving about an hour away. I’m trying to go through different remedies – like Ignatia (grief/anxiety) or Sepia (as a mom/grandma stressors), or Aconite (fears of future, $next paycheck) etc. Thanks.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

In my experience, I find that Ignatia fits more types of anxiety than any other. Start with one that fits best, use it for a few days or so and observe.

  8. Elaine says:

Very timely article! Thank you, thank you, Joette, for sharing this valuable protocol. It can potentially save many lives. Can Hep sulph 6c also fit into this lead (or mercury) toxicity protocol?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I don’t have experience with using HS for lead poisoning, but if the symptoms fit, it can certainly be considered.

  9. Lois says:

My son and I both tested positive for unusually high levels of lead, and were then treated with a series of IV EDTA chelation treatments. Would it make sense to follow up with Alumina and Causticum?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

We don’t use homeopathy as a just-in-case measure because it is medicine, not supplements nor vitamins, etc.

      1. Lois says:

We’re both symptomatic, especially my son, but it’s hard to know if it’s lead-related: brain fog, extreme fatigue, achiness, abdominal pain.

        1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Without knowing that lead is the cause, it would not be prudent to take a remedy just in case. If however, you live in Flint, you know that you’ve been drinking tainted water and the symptoms you’re experiencing have resulted directly from that event, then it would be rational to consider this method.

  10. Wendy says:

How do you feel about chelation for excessive lead? After tests I have found I have very high levels of lead in my body. I’m seriously considering chelation. Is it safe?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I have heard both sides of the argument for and against chelation. For myself and family, I much prefer homeopathy.

      1. Wendy says:

What is the argument against? Does it get the heavy metals active in your body instead of flushing them out? I will be checking out homeopathy as well.
Chelation was recommended by a naturopath.
        Thanks.

        1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I’m not a naturopath so its not within my scope of expertise nor interest. Also, I saw my mother suffer for many months after a few rounds some 30 years ago from chelation.

          1. Wendy says:

            Thank you for replying.

          2. Dianne says:

I was tested for heavy metal and my lead was off the charts. I tried chelation twice. First time with a suppository and I’ve never been so sick. Migraine, throwing, diarrhea. I could not get out of bed. So then my doctor suggested an oral pill at a child’s dose. Same thing happened. You can die from chelation. I’m never doing it again. I’m going to try these remedies. It was a homeopath that suggested I be tested. I’m surprised he didn’t try these remedies on me although we did use a constitutional. I know longer have access to a homeopathic doctor but now I have elevated reverse t3 and I can’t help but wonder if it’s the lead.

          3. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

            Your experience is not uncommon.

  11. Cathy Little says:

I have had a heavy metal test and was found to be high in lead and cadmium. I have been going to a naturopathic doctor who has prescribed plumbum as the treatment along with an iron supppliment as I was low in iron and iron displaces lead. This is my second time dealing with heavy metal poisoning, the first time I was off the chart in mercury, aluminum and several others, high in lead as well. I had several rounds of chelation therapy after having my amalgam filings removed. I haven’t been able to figure out the source of the lead and cadmium, the water test came back negative for lead. I also read that activated charcoal can remove lead. I appreciate any information you could give me on this subject and how affective plumbum is on removing lead from the body.
    Thank-you in advance
    Cathy

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

High lead and cadmium tests don’t tell me that there is a pathology. If there’s no illness, there’s nothing to treat.

  12. Cathy Little says:

I have polymiositis, an autoimmune disease that’s attacking my muscles. I have severe muscle weakness and the disease has progressed over the past ten years to the point where I can barely walk with a walker. Getting up from a sitting position is very difficult. I am now on a very restricted no grain diet, basically fruit, vegetables and meat.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Polymiositis and how it presents is how homeopathy would approach this; not an assumption of the cause.

  13. Lore Murdock says:

I Thank you greatfully for this information! I just started on causticum and pulsiatte 3 days ago and I’m feeling better already! In Febru I was diagnosed (from a hair sample) with high lead. I have no idea how I got it. I was raised in MI but 35 years in CA. Who knows? I’ve been doing chelation with cilantro (with spirulina and chlorella as the carrier to get it all out if the system, after the cilantro attached to the heavy metals) as well as EDTA NAC as well as whole food vitamins. I’ve had an organic diet for the last 15 years, eat no sugar, don’t smoke, etc. I’m also going to start some homeopathics for my severe anemia.
    Again, THANKS!!!

  14. Tanya says:

My materia medica also notes Colocynthis as a good lead antidote. I would assume, of course, it depends upon the presenting symptoms. Have you had any experience with it?

  15. Yolande Kielstra says:

Question: When moving lead out of the body does Nux Vomica need to be used in conjunction?
It is hard to tell which of the above homeopaths would be needed as this is for a 10yr boy with Down Syndrome and both physical symptoms of Alumina and Causticum are present (more so of Alumina) but these symptoms may also be due to the genetic condition.
Why the assumptions of lead toxicity?, because a hair mineral analysis is showing high lead and other metals interfering with mineral absorption.
Also is there toxin re-circulation with homeopathics? (as can happen with herbal or DMSA protocols)

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I will be covering these kinds of details in my upcoming course on toxins, “Rethinking Detox with Practical Homeopathy: How to Stop Stressing About Toxins and Fearlessly Achieve Health the Simple Way”.
It matters not to what you attribute this condition or that; if the symptoms are prominent, you use the appropriate homeopathic/s.
I put more weight on the symptoms and the name of the condition rather than an analysis.
Toxin re-circulation? Homeopathy simply makes the correction.

      1. Yolande Kielstra says:

It says the course is closed will it open up later again? or do you have a link to the course?

        1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Its generally closed but if you email my office at Joettessassistant@JoetteCalabrese.com or call my office 561.537.5900 during business hours EST my team can help you.
